    City Weekend Says

These two neighboring ski resorts are both lacking in runs, equipment, food and service. RMB300 a day, but discounts available if you call ahead.

On a scale from 0 to 20 (0 = the ski mound in Chaoyang park, 10 = Nanshan) PanShan is a 2 – Lacking in all areas

PanShan盘山and YuLongShan玉龙山滑雪场 are under the same management and are near the scenic PanShan Mountains north of JiXian(蓟县) . PanShan is the better of the two. “Better” in a relative sense as the skiing is bottom tier; equipment, food and aesthetics all suffer. Not one, but two lift attendants were taking a snooze as beginners struggled with the lift and no attendant at all was stationed at the top. Snowmobile rides were running on the same slope as the skiers which seemed not only unsafe but left tracks in the snow that could catch an edge if hit at the right angle. There is a better resort not far away called JiZhou International, however, judging by the cleared paths on an adjacent hill it looks like PanShan is planning two intermediate runs; might be worth keeping an eye on the place.

Prices: Park entrance is RMB 20/person. Posted rates of RMB170/4hours or RMB300/day on the weekend are outrageous prices for the quality level but call ahead for discounts as low as RMB100/day.

Equipment: Range of ancient non-carving skis; Swallow, K2, Fisher plus a few snowboards. Only low-end beginner boots available. No lines getting equipment. Locker area had ample space. Equipment is tracked with paper tickets. No changing rooms.

Lodge: One huge warehouse-like building house everything; the ticket area, equipment area and both restaurants. The restaurant offered individual hotpot for RMB38 and a range of slightly overpriced Chinese dishes. Sit at standard round tables or fast food-style tables but don’t stray far off the padded walkway as the tile floors get slippery when wet and deadly with even the smallest bit of snow. A separate area with wicker chairs offered snacks, instant noodles and drinks but no hot chocolate. Outside had barbeque but very sparse outdoor seating.

Lifts/Runs: - Three easy hills of varying difficulty served by 2 disc lifts and 2 cable tows. The top 20% of the wide center hill is intermediate level. Waits were under 5 minutes. They do have a snow groomer.

Getting there and back : From SiHui (subway line 1 四惠) exit A, go across the street (under the bridge) and turn left walking until you see the “inter-city” bus terminal. Buy a ticket for JiXian (蓟县), RMB 28, buses leave at 15 min intervals. Tell the driver you are going to PanShan and they can let you off a bit before JiXian. The bus takes 1.75 hours in good traffic. Hire a driver (RMB 30) for the 20 min ride to PanShan.

Getting back: The last bus leaves JiXian at 5:00

    Night skiing: No.
