Cold Comfort: Wintering at Mutianyu
Grandma’s Place in Mutianyu is a rustic but comfortable bed and breakfast tucked beneath the Great Wall. The restored courtyard cottage fits four and works well as a couple’s retreat, a family weekend or in our case, a girls’ getaway. Even in chilly weather of winter, you’ll feel snug as a bug around the old-fashioned wood-fired stove.
Two hours northeast of Beijing, Mutianyu has become a popular expat getaway. The village is quaint and charming with homes built in traditional courtyard style. From the main road, you’ll see arresting, snow speckled views of the Great Wall high above.
Grandma’s Place is run by the Schoolhouse, a lodging outfit in the village that has set up rental cottages, restaurants, a glass-blowing studio and an art gallery. The Schoolhouse prides itself on being sustainable and using existing structures for all rental properties (now numbering half a dozen).
Grandma’s faded blue wood façade is original, as is much of the furniture and decoration inside. This isn’t log cabin living; instead expect a kitchenette with an electric stove, a refrigerator stocked with wine, drench showers and floor heating. Dining at the Schoolhouse restaurant down the street is casual but excellent. The chef uses seasonal produce grown from local gardens. All ice creams and desserts are homemade.
There are plenty of trails leading up to the Wall, both restored and unrestored parts. But if that’s too much for you, we recommend brewing some tea, bundling up with extra blankets and sitting outside underneath the moon to watch for shooting stars.
We saw two.
