LAN Club Description

French designer Philippe Starck has dolloped the Twin Towers with glamor, making eye candy the real main course at this seen-and-be-seen restaurant and club, where some of China's top stars go to dine, imbibe and party. The restaurant serves some of Beijing's most delectable contemporary cuisine, and the club's cocktails are actually worthy of their high price tags.

LAN Club Beijing is an exclusive lounge and restaurant with global artistic taste.

Being the only work by renowned artist Philippe Starck in China, LAN holds a large number of art treasures and well-known antique furniture, like the world famous hand-made Baccarat crystal chandeliers, the black ones especially used by European royal families, and hundreds of world famous baroque paintings hanging from the ceiling and the walls in unique frames. Additionally, a near to a 1.000 square meters large oil painting canvas painted by 20 foreign artists, was cut into pieces to fit LAN, which now form the walls of the 35 private rooms. LAN holds a fresh looking oyster bar, a luxury cigar room, a red wine chamber, a classic English bar and a restaurant serving Contemporary Cantonese cuisine highlighting specialty dishes from all over China.

More of a lounge than a club I would say. The bathrooms are nice and the prices are okay. But don't expect a party atmosphere. The live music is also hit or miss.

Great design, bad everything else. Recommend visiting for the decor then leaving for Xiu or another nearby club. LAN has gotten consistently worse since its opening years back.

Design deserves at least 4 stars but bad food and drinks subtract 3.

5 of my lady friends wanted to go clubbing last Friday. Wanting to try something different we went to LAN. I had not been there in over a year and the band was pretty good the last couple of times I had been there.
We sat for a while waiting for the band to start. but it was smooth jazz music and the dance floor is gone. We ahead to Xiu instead which is not too far. Wasted about one hour. Thank god the service is slow so we had not ordered drinks yet.
Nice bathroom though.

A waste of time. If you went there for 3 hours you'd probably spend 5 minutes marvelling at the decor, and the remaining 175 minutes wondering why you came somewhere so clearly overrated.

While I have to agree the decor is nothing to write home about, on a Saturday night the house band [Jackson Twins & Zero] does make up for this. The upside is that the entrance fee is FREE. Service is not the best, though they do pour a good cocktail, Manhattan costing about 60 RMB. Beer is pricey at 50 RMB for a 330 ml bottle of Tsingtao. Compared to places such as Suzi Wong's, this is far better value for money and far more enjoyable. staff are friendly, toilets are spacious and clean, though it can prove to be an expensive night out.

Philippe Starck may be a genius of interior design, but his skills are clearly taxed when it comes to public relations. Associating his name with this bunch of thugs and arrivistes does little for his reputation, particularly in the eyes of any Beijingers with any degree of breeding.
Notably, the waitstaff and bartenders go well with Lan's soul, always displaying a very peasant attitude toward guests.

Visit once to see the travesty but do not buy a drink!

Worst bar service ever. I ordered a belgian beer (priced the same as a tsingdao, 50 kuai) and the bartender ripped it out of the fridge and opened it so violently that it belched out about one third of the bottle in foam. I protested, and he tried to convince me that this was the normal process of opening this beer. Having drunk around the world and opened this beer a few times myself, I was pretty sure that was a shameless lie. Nonetheless, I paid and drank my less full, and less fizzy beer. A bit later, I decided to have a second. The same guy comes up, and I tell him not to screw it up this time. Well, this go around he couldn't seem to find a bottle opener, so he grabs and ice scooper to awkwardly pry of the cap. Yep, you guessed it! Once again, a massive, volcanic eruption, and I was forced to pay for it. Well, normally I would have left then and there, but I was there for a show, and it was far from over. So, I eventually went back for a third, but this time slipped around to the other bartender. He opened it correctly (not hard to do) and so the story has a happy ending. However, I won't be going back to LAN anytime soon...unless I happen to be at Guomao in the evening and need to drop a #2. The private toilets there are pretty nice.

Lan club gets a lot of credit internationally but for what I'm not sure. This club is dead except for when there is an event which isn't that often. I wont restate what others have said before but listen to their words - they are correct. Don't waste your time in this high fashion money pit.

Lan has become inconsistent and we have therefore stopped going. You never know what to expect in this place any more. One week it's a band playing cover songs, another week it could be a DJ playing 80s music, another might be techno, another cheesy pop tunes. What happened to the great house music that used to get played there? Service has gone totally off the rails too.

As it stands, I will not be returning any time soon, but once there is some consistency back in the place I'll check it out again, but please guys, decide on some kind of musical identity, and train the staff properly!

Having been told that LAN club is a "globally recognized nightspot with an international collection of investors and design from Philippe Starck" meant very little to me after the experience I had at LAN last night.

After a friend of mine became involved in a dispute with the management of LAN, my girlfriend and I went to listen to what was going on. 15 minutes into the conversation, we were told, for no tangible reason, to leave the premise.

Not wanting to create any conflict, we headed for the elevators, tailed by one of the club's muscle-managers and two security guards.

Everything was fine, although we agreed that we had been treated very rudely. At this point, in front of a small crowd outside the LG tower, aforementioned muscle-manager began to push me repeatedly and call me a "caucasian-foreigner" and other such names. Not wanting to turn the situation into something larger than it needed to be, my girlfriend and I started to simply walk away. For whatever reason, the manager and two security guards continued to follow us, and the two guards even began to yell at me and struck me with two kicks to the side.

Given the clientele-based nature of the industry LAN operates in, I would recommend the owners of this lounge to take a serious look at the efficacy of the muscle-heads managing operations. While someone to enforce protocol is obviously needed for such an organization, I fear that the pragmatic aspect of the managing process is non-existent.

Suffice to say I will not be returning.

Anyone looking for an 100,000 sqm ex-Philippe Starck bar restaurant that houses world famous hand-made Baccarat crystal chandeliers baroque paintings hanging from the ceiling and walls near to a 1.000 square meters large oil painting canvas painted by 20 foreign artists which now form the walls of the 35 private rooms? How about a fresh looking oyster bar, a luxury cigar room, a red wine chamber, a classic English bar and a restaurant serving Contemporary Cantonese cuisine highlighting specialty crappy dishes from all over China?

Look no further. LAN CLUB will be out of business in 6 months.

I don’t know of anyone that goes twice. Nothing short of a total management overhaul will keep LAN CLUB in business for another year. They [management] clearly are listening to their own rhetoric. LAN is no more a world class venue than Chocolate or Latte are. Tourists may think it is but everyone else in this town knows the food is terrible, the drinks are overpriced, the service is inconsistent, and the décor is only cool the first time.

Listen to someone that lives here. If you are going to blow the rent on a night out, don’t do it here. You’ll just go home drunk and broke.

Another highly overrated icon on the Beijing scene further demonstrating signs of withering under the stress of its own excess. If this were an amusement park it would be highly rated horror house but as a bar or even a restaurant, it excels only at being sub-average. The drinks are sometimes good, sometimes bad. Sometimes they just don’t arrive at all. I am not impressed nor should you be just because you’re thirsty in a bar with paintings on the ceiling.

For dinner, just don’t. Honestly, just don’t. The food is awful. The best thing on the menu continues to be the dandan mian and it costs 10x more than elsewhere.

Decor alternates: Chocolate or latte. Dancing alternates: mix or vics. Drink alternates: Q-bar, bar blu, or almost anything in the sanlitun area. Food alternates: jez, almost the entire city is better and with exception to Qianmen #23, it's all cheaper.

Honestly folks, forgo the BS. There is much better alts in BJ these days. Don't support mediocrity!

Expensive place.
Though the decor is done well, you dont get a great feeling here.
Either because of the staff or management indifference or the quality of drinks or food.
The drinks are ok,the food ok,but you expect great things at these kind of places.
Except for the decor done, they got to scale up their effectiveness of management.

I really hate fake critics with 5 stars. Let's be honest. Lan doesn't deserve 5 stars. Sure the decor is fenomenal, but we all know the service sucks. Last time a waiter couldn even point me to the wash room when i asked him so! C'mon, it's not like i've asked about the ingredients in the cocktail (which by the way i did, but you probably guessed what was the answer).
I saw Sebastien took over the management, so i hope he will close it down for a week together with all the staff in there and won't open it untill he trains them the way they should be trained.
Drinks are expensive as they should be for a venue like this, but when you don't have the service even half-way close to what they would like to be, than all is in vain.
Sorry guys... when all the aspects (service, ambient and quality) will be there, I will also be there to give you thumbs up.

In fact, LAN Club is not really expensive, especailly the BAR. On Wed, over 20 kinds of Martini is only RMB70 per glass and Thu live making cocktail is only RMB40 per glass, cheaper than 5 star hotels and even better music and food.

The prices are the same as 5 star hotel bars and that's as far as the resemblance goes. The food is mediocre, the drinks are bland, the music (whether live or not) would be better suited for the elevators.

As for the design, I don't know what Philippe Starck was on, but I DO NOT want some of it. The whole place looks like a bad acid trip and had the architect been anyone else, it would be considered for what it is: an eye sore with an overpriced menu and dodgy ambiance.

Customers can be divided in three categories:
1) wannabe hipsters who secretly believe they are the Beijingren version of Paris Hilton (yes, this is a classy joint);
2) couples who believe that money is the fundamental basis for... well, everything, if you catch my drift;
3) innocent tourists/newcomers who heard somewhere that this was one of the best bars in town.

this venue is particularly baffling to me... but after reading a review on another website, its a bit more fathomable how it came to be, how its existence is allowed. the answer to this is...it was designed in under an hour by someone who cant possibly outdo his earlier works, and who is known for designing using a current emotion on a whim, mr philippe starck. ahhhh, clarity!

“I was a producer of materiality and I am ashamed of this fact.Everything I designed was unnecessary. I will definitely give up in two years’ time. I want to do something else, but I don’t know what yet. I want to find a new way of expressing myself …design is a dreadful form of expression…."

being as to how thats a direct quote from an interview with Mr Stark himself, we can clearly see this place is one big joke (and fat paycheck) for the 60 yr old frenchman.

as for my thoughts on this hole, errr, establishment, it is, for lack of a better or more eloquent sentence, a completely disgusting mess of cheap crap.
the lighting is poor, the use of space awkward, and they seemed to buy nothing of quality, not even for the flooring, which I noticed chipping away... fake art made a feeble attempt to decorate the walls (or cover the holes, to be more precise), the ceiling was a mess of industrial cables and tubing, and the annoying as hell TV monitors replaying video clips of past parties didnt do it any favors to up the classiness factor. ummm, just a suggestion, but when your club is frequented by old, balding men accompanied by Russian sex workers, its not exactly prudent to showcase it.
the prices were ridiculous, and in all honesty, i didnt want to ingest anything to lower my inhibitions in a place full of the types i encountered here. scary. and i wasnt the only one who noticed. i heard others comments. none good. the only revelers of the skanky ambiance were the ones who were too drunk when they arrived.
the bar area smelled, and thats not new in beijing, but it SMELLED. the staff was RUDE, unbelievably so. i finished my cigarette, threw it on the ground, and before i even had a chance to move an inch to the side, a man dressed in head to toe white was stomping on MY foot as he was trying to get to the butt and put it out, which, by the way, i had done myself. no "sorries" even uttered, not even a bit of concern in his eye or twinge of regret. idiot. who trained these people??
i also dont get the whole fascination with the bathrooms. they are garish, lack ANY taste, and are, again, just a hole stuffed chock-full of CRAP accessories you can buy at Walmart.
to put it short and curtly, this place looked like it belonged in a scene of Alice in Wonderland witnessed by an individual on crack.
seriously, i can go on, but wont waste my time.

This is the first bar in Beijing I went to since moving here about a week ago. I'd never imagined such a gloriously kitsch place could exist. The rhino! The water spewing swan taps! Loved it. Sat at the bar with friendly chatty bar staff and enjoyed the jazz band (the bass guitarist rocks!) Martinis were not clean and crisp, but rather chemical tasting (like cheap college vodka). It was pretty quiet on the Friday night even late. Perhaps patrons were saving themselves for Soiree Blanche? In any case, will definitely be bringing out of town visitors here.

LAN is a place for indulgence, its super expensive, beautifully decorated, cocktails are not for the faint hearted, service is a little clumsy but refreshingly friendly. Also worth a mention is their DJ on weekends who's music style is quite unique for Beijing and seems to somehow just get the music exactly right for the situation.

I have been here many times for private parties, dinner parties, drinks, fashion shows, etc. I agree with many above on the small/tiny portions with high price tag. Plus since the olympics there is new a 10% "service charge" added to everything but the waiter/bartender assured me this did NOT got to him but the boss! The place looks great but that's it. The tiny bit of food you end up getting is not amazing anyway. It's overhyped and overpriced. One night I had to order a bloody mary FOUR TIMES before they used tomato juice that wasn't rotten! It could have been the horseradish that was off too...They didn't even apologize!

Does anyone else feel like they're in a transition scene from "Ocean's 11" while sitting in the LAN Club? I mean that as a compliment. The LAN Club offers some fantastic scenery to go along with the meals.

No two tables, chairs, pictures or plates seem alike. With a ceiling covered in framed paintings, Victorian-styled tables lining the dining halls, private bathrooms, a jazz club and several long bar rooms, LAN is nothing less than extravagant. One could spend several hours poking around the South Beauty Group's creation.

As much as one could rave about the interior decor, the food is another story. Typically, one comes to a restaurant to eat food, not to sample it. LAN's portions are simply too small. While they've got a robust wine selection, this isn't a restaurant where one gets the most out of the meal.

LAN is cute with a funky vibe. Certainly not a feast for the eyes! If you have taste, go to FaceBar to feast your eyes upon delectable art and fine cuisine. I found LAN to be very wannabee. (I only saw the main hall, entryway, large dinning room, bar and row of gaudey bathrooms... there were two or more rooms I did not see because they were reserved for a company event... perhaps these are what everyone above was raving about?) The staff is nice enough, and the patrons were cool. LAN is a decent place for taking associates when you have an expense account at your disposal.

Feast for the eyes, not the stomach.

Ok, if you have a very important guest, like Bill Gates or Steve Jobs and you need a place to really really dine to impress, this is the place then. Just note that your credit card will most definitely swipe lots of ZERO.

Otherwise if you're just bringing a date, just stop for the cocktails and dont even start with the menu.

I've heard the food isn't as impressive as the place (that'd be hard to do, I imagine), but I've never felt the need to eat when I went there. The place is a feast for the eyes and even if you didn't have a bite to eat all night you wouldn't leave hungry. Designed by Phillipe Starke, the place is dazzling, and it's not wonder Beijing's starlets go there. It's perhaps the only place where anyone would find it hard to pay attention to them. The drinks are well mixed and creative, the perfect accessory for the place.

My group of 10 had a sensational dinner in one of the many private rooms last Friday. The whole place was a fantastic experience, from the decor and service to the food and entertainment. The latter even included one of us reclining and spinning on the huge lazy susan a la Nicole Kidman in "Eyes Wide Shut". We agreed that the place is best described as "Alice in Wonderland meets Eyes Wide Shut" Our friends have asked what we ate, and it is hard to describe - so many exotic courses in the exotic banquet, so "Asian International Fusion" will have to do.The Oyster Bar and Club Room are also amazing. So many places, so little time!
