My name is Ken Wyland. I am the founder of the "Beijing Ballroom" Dance Club. We hold weekly Saturday dance parties (and classes) at the Sino-Chu Wine Bar. For information, see our club website below.
I love Beijing and I love its culture and people. I think that native Beijingers are probably the friendliest big-city people in the world. I love how they are so laid-back. They don't judge people by how much money they make. They choose their friends carefully. They value their free time. In short, they live their lives just like they ride their bicycles. I hope that Beijing, as it transforms, remains a place where neither business nor government rule every aspect of ordinary people's lives.
Of course Beijing can also be a tough city to live in, especially if you're from the Chinese country-side and work as a hired laborer. Like any big city it attracts all types of people. But all of us -- young, old, native Beijinger, Chinese immigrant worker and expat -- share the excitement of living in this amazing city.
One final thing I love about Beijing is how so many ordinary citizens use its parks for dancing. Granted, there are not many elegant places here where you can go dancing to Western music, but that's why I founded "Beijing Ballroom" !
