Here are a few Shanghai gyms that have opened within the last year that are worth signing up for, or at the very least, for you to consider dropping in for a class.

F45 Training an Australian franchise that combines elements of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), Circuit Training, and Functional Training. This combination of interval, cardiovascular and strength training has been proven to be the most effective workout method for burning fat and building lean muscle. It's a high intensity circuit workout that's fun, effective and efficient all within a tidy 45 minutes. Oh, and guess we should mention that it was opened by Hugh Jackman’s trainer, hence the buzz. It’s RMB200 for one session, RMB1,688 for a month.

MOVEM is a boutique-spinning studio promoting a lifestyle concept that incorporates indoor cycling with a health and fitness community. You can expect the same as you would any spinning studio—loud thumping music that matches your heart rate when you're at the peak of your cardio workout, disco lights to match, and trainers who have a ridiculous amount of stamina and enthusiasm. Your first class is free, drop-ins are RMB220 per class and ten classes will cost RMB1,750.

The newest addition to stylish Shanghai fitness chain, Basebody Fitness Boxing is KO, a full body boxing workout with a nightclub atmosphere. The class begins with a light cardio based warm up and time tested classic circuits like burpees, step ups and shoulder rows, led by one of their fearless, shouty trainers. Then, the shadow boxing begins for the rest of the session. It’s RMB160 for a trial session.

Alright, so you don't like spinning and you don't have the core for HIIT, FIT, or anything that requires any more exertion than jogging on a treadmill. Perhaps Jump Live is for you. It's a boutique studio with a focus on cardio workouts done on trampolines to techno music. You'll learn that "hardcore jumping enthusiasts" are a thing, and you'll gain a new meaning to the words "jumping jacks." It's a 45-minute class. Drop-ins are RMB228, 20 sessions for RMB3,760. If anything, it's a great team building exercise, right?

Z&B has expanded to include a full gym stacked with state-of-the-art equipment in addition to their boutique studio, located within the same building. While Z&B’s boutique fitness studio on the 14th floor offers a range of one-hour classes, this street-level gym is the perfect for those wanting to squeeze in a quick 30-minute session during their lunch break. They have free weights, assisted weights, treadmills and other cardio machines, as well as personal trainers for pilates, boxing, and others. Membership start at RMB799 per month, drop-ins for RMB100.
And, there’s Park Box. It’s not your typical gym, and it’s certainly worth mentioning on this list. This 24-hour capsule gyms are all over the city, and you can find them in residential neighborhoods and industrial parks, as well as commercial streets and public spaces like parks and plazas. There are four sizes to fit up to two, four, five, and six people. They're equipped with air purifiers, automated heating and cooling systems, 24-hour surveillance cameras and changing rooms, but no shower facilities. Gym equipment includes Smith machines, functional trainers, dumbbells, boat machines, treadmills, yoga balls and yoga mats, and dynamic bikes. Fees are only RMB10 per hour, and yes, it’s all done through an APP (公园盒子 ParkBox). There’s currently 10 in Shanghai, but the fitness cabins are said to grow to 300 units all over China by next year.
