Shanghai is seeing a surge of American restaurants of late, from diners to burger joints to modern eateries. That said, it’s easy to overlook some of the city’s golden oldies. Run by two expats with a combined 20 years of experience in the Shanghai F&B industry, Shanghai Slim’s has been serving no-frills American food for the past seven years. If that’s news to you, maybe you haven’t spent enough time in Sinan Mansions, a swath of restored shikumen buildings housing retail and F&B establishments a couple streets away from Xintiandi.
Slim’s does traditional American fare with a focus on dry-aged beef, lobster and burgers. With the exception of the Grilled Salmon (RMB98), most of the menu comprises heavy-hitting meaty mains. The 10-ounce Grass Fed Australian Rib Eye (RMB198), which is also the smallest steak on the menu, is finished with just the right amount of char, and comes with a choice of truffled mashed potatoes, salad or fries.
The Atomic Bleu & Bacon burger (RMB78) features crispy bacon and gorgonzola atop a house-made patty of ground Prime beef. You may want to pass on this one, as you can get burgers of the same or better caliber for less at Bistro Burger or Fat Cow.
Opt instead for the NYC Steak Sandwich (RMB98), a prime rib eye on a homemade bun with just enough blue cheese to complement the sweet caramelized onions. You'll be pleasantly surprised, as we were.
Slim’s BBQ Ribs (RMB138/half, RMB258/whole) may lack the succulent juiciness of other ribs we’ve tried, but the generous dose of tangy sauce just about makes up for it. And when you can get all the ribs you want for RMB228 per person, does it really matter? Come on! It's all-you-can-eat!
Though the restaurant bears “Slim” in its name, your post-meal waistline may beg to differ. If you do manage to find room for dessert, Slim’s menu has a solid selection of classics, like creamy, homemade tiramisu (RMB52) and cheesecake (RMB52).
If you’re looking for some all-American favorites in an unpretentious setting, Shanghai Slim’s is definitely worth hitting up.
