Balancing Your "Qi" at CHI, The Spa, Pudong Shangri-La

You’re here to be waited on hand and foot

Enter CHI, The Spa at the Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai. Equipped with nine beautiful private suites, the spa includes two hydrotherapy suites with vitality pools and luxurious facilities of herbal steam and showers. You’re here to be waited on hand and foot. Here, it’s the awe of grandeur, having orange peel tea served to you while your feet undergo a gentle scrub and a state of relaxation unattainable at your local parlor that you sign up for.

The 90-minute CHI Balance Massage (RMB1,388 plus 10 percent service charge and six percent VAT) is by no means cheap, but sometimes you want to pamper yourself for a special occasion. The treatment is available for couples and administered in an opulent suite fully equipped with a bathtub and rain forest showers. So switch off your phones, step out of your stuffy boots and coats and don fluffy slippers and fuzzy bathrobes and slip into a zen-like trance.

You begin by dipping your feet into a huge brass pot of warm water as a masseuse scrubs off the grime. The following Balance Massage is a firm yet yet forgiving palm pressure massage with essential oils that follows the body’s meridian lines to revitalize the “qi,” normalize energy flow and strengthen the body’s natural ability to fight jet lag and insomnia. You can also ask the masseuse to adjust strength and to concentrate on problem areas.

Saying you’ll be “rejuvenated” might be a cliché, but there’s a certain glow and satisfaction you’d get from a fancy spa as compared to the beating you’d get from your local massage spot.
