You may have already heard the name ‘Chi Fan for Charity’. You may have seen photos of enthusiastic diners reveling at your favorite restaurants around town. You may be thinking, “Looks fun! But what the heck is it?”
Chi Fan for Charity is the largest food and beverage event for charity in Asia. It’s not your typical charity fundraising gala. Instead, it’s the carefully coordinated coming together of over 35 restaurants, sponsors, and party guests across the city for one special night every year.
Divided into two parts, the evening starts off at a number of sought after restaurants, and ends with a big after-party where all participating guests from different locations around the city will join up.
Participating restaurants are incredibly generous. They prepare a three-course meal worth anywhere from RMB500 to RMB1500 per guest, including two beverages. Guests pay to attend, but the money goes straight to Chi Fan for Charity’s beneficiaries, meaning the restaurant donates 100 percent of the food, drink, and all the work that goes into the evening.
As well as the meal and beverages the price includes the entrance fee for the after-party. Dinner guests gather at a central location for a massive after-party, where the fun and fundraising continues, thanks to the generous donations of sponsors. Participants can enjoy live music on the dance floor as well as an open bar.
How does Chi Fan for Charity raise money?
The main way Chi Fan for Charity raises money is through table sales. All of the food, drink, and hard work is donated by the restaurants so that those proceeds can go straight to this year's beneficiaries Shanghai Sunrise and the World Academy for the Future of Women.
Chi Fan for Charity also raises money at the official after party. This year sponsors are donating amazing prizes guests can win through an after-party raffle, raising even more money for this year’s beneficiaries.
In addition to the night of the event, Chi Fan for Charity’s volunteers organize pre-event fundraising parties. One of the founding members, has continued her support with fundraising “charity spins” every year at Spinback Fitness. There will be a Chi Fan for Charity spin to raise funds on November 16, scan the QR code in the flyer below to sign up.
More community members have joined in, with District holding a fundraising party last year, and live storytelling platform Unravel incorporating Chi Fan for Charity fundraising activities into their recent October event that raised over RMB5,000.
