An indoor theme park dedicated to Hello Kitty will open in Shanghai in October 2018. Hello Kitty has long been one of Asia’s favourite cartoon characters, so it was perhaps inevitable that the forty-three year old anthropomorphised cat would get her own theme park in Shanghai.
Plans indicate the theme park will be spread over three floors in the Shanghai Mart Retail Mall (floors 8-10), meaning that the Hello Kitty wonderland will occupy a space equivalent in size to five Olympic swimming pools. The indoor theme park, located in downtown Nanjing Dong Lu will cost around RMB200 million to build. Shimao, the company who will run the theme park, are expecting Chinese Hello Kitty fans to make a beeline (or should that be feline) for the extravagant Hello Kitty based theme park, and as such estimate welcoming 3,000 visitors through their doors every day. Each of the three floors will be designed around different eras in Shanghai’s history, with one anticipated to be based on the aesthetic of glamorous 1930s Shanghai.
Hello Kitty is currently reckoned to be worth seven billion US dollars a year, and Kitty White (to give the iconic creature her full name) is already the star of two Japanese Theme Parks. The entire façade of the Shanghai Mall Mart which will house the Theme Park is expected to be redesigned by an Italian Architect in time for the Hello Kitty Theme Park’s opening.
