American indie-pop band Foster the People are making their China debut with a show at Modern Sky Lab on January 16.
Bursting onto the music scene back in 2010, the Cleveland Ohio rockers are most known for sleeper hit “Pumped Up Kicks”. Despite being a track about a disillusioned child with dreams of committing a school shooting, it would go on to become one of the most popular songs of 2011. The song, which contrasted dark lyrics like “All the other kids with the pumped up kicks, you better run, better run, outrun my gun” with upbeat music was licensed in television shows like Entourage, Gossip Girl, and Pretty Little Liars, to name a few.
Released as the lead single for their 2011 debut album Torches, the album peaked at number eight on the US Billboard Top 200 chart and was certified platinum in Australia, the US, the Philippines, and Canada. Receiving favorable reviews from critics the album would eventually go on to be nominated for the 2012 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, and "Pumped Up Kicks" received a nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
The three-piece outfit followed up this initial bout of success with their sophomore release, 2014’s Supermodel. The album was a slight departure from their debut, featuring instrumentation from different cultures as well as songs that explored social issues, anti-consumerism, and the ugly side of poverty. The album debuted at number three on the US Billboard Top 200 charts, eventually spawning four singles.
Their latest work, 2016’s Sacred Heart’s Club is possibly the biggest departure from the band’s original indie-pop song. The twelve tracks combine elements of soul, dance, and electronic genres. Despite being an aggressive and sensual bass-heavy dance song, third single “Loyal Like Sid and Nancy” features lyrical content commenting on immigration reform in the US as well as “Black Lives Matter” and the murder of Eric Garner by police in New York City. Starting off the year with a world tour, the men will be coming to Shanghai with a show at Modern Sky Lab. Get your tickets here.
