Incoming: Rapper Joey Bada$$ is Taking Over Arkham

The "Land of the Free" rapper is making his way to Shanghai

On January 27, American rapper Joey Bada$$ will be making his way to Shanghai for an electrifying show at Arkham. The 22-year-old Brooklyn native first cut his musical chops as a founding member of Pro Era, short for Progressive Era, a hip-hop collective he started with a group of fellow lyricists in high school.

In early 2012, the group gained underground recognition with the release of several mixtapes including Joey’s debut indie release, 1999. Though based heavily around sampled production beats, the work garnered critical acclaim, being nominated for mixtape of the year by television network BET and was also ranked number 38 on Complex Magazine’s best albums of 2012.

Despite offers of major label representation, the rapper decided to remain an independent artist, going on to release Summer Knights in October 2013. Upon it’s release, the EP debuted at number 48 on the US Billboard Top r&b and hip-hop albums charts.

Heavily influenced by the style ofheavyweight rappers of the 1990's like Nas Tupac, and Andre 3000, Joey’s music embodies the saying “the personal is political” with songs detailing America’s long history with racism, along with commentary on the countries current political climate. His debut album B4.Da.$$ received generally positive reviews, debuting on the US Billboard Hot 200 at number five.

The 2016 single “Devastated” off his second album All-Amerikkkan Bada$$ is a song of redemption and resilience aboutthe artist's pre-fame issues and his rise to the top. Follow up single “Land of the Free” is a political commentary on United States president Donald Trump which featured lyrics like, “Sorry, America, but I will not be your soldier. Obama just wasn't enough, I need some more closure.”

Delving into his feelings on a number of social, political, and personal issues, Joey Bada$$ is putting a new face to what being a badass rapper is all about. See him live on the stage of Arkham in late January.
