Live Music This Weekend: JUE Festival Special

This Friday, March 11th, local promoter [Split Works](http://www.spli-t.com) unveils their third annual [JUE Festival](http://www.juefestival.com/), China’s first-and-only urban arts and music festival, a three-week celebration of music, art and comedy in Shanghai and Beijing, featuring dozens of Chinese and international bands, DJs, painters, etc. While JUE 2011 kicks off with indie poppers [Mr. Dadao](http://site.douban.com/mrdadado/) and [We Save Strawberries](http://site.douban.com/wssgang/) at [Yuyintang](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/nightlife/live_music/has/yuyintang/), [this Friday](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/82202/), the festival really heats up on [Monday, March 14th](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/82646/), when Norwegian quartet [The Whitest Boy Alive](http://site.douban.com/WBA/) play the [Zhijiang Dream Factory](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/nightlife/bars/has/zhi-jiang-dream-factory/). JUE 2011 also features the arrival of international acts like Canadian indie rock outfit [The Besnard Lakes](http://site.douban.com/thebesnardlakes) ([March 18th](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/82203/)), Dutch dream rock-tet [The Black Atlantic](http://site.douban.com/blackatlantic/) ([March 27th](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/82204/)) and Japanese electronicists [World’s End Girlfriend and Black Hole Carnival](http://site.douban.com/worldsendgf/) ([April 2nd](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/82647/)), but for the first time in JUE’s history, it appears that Chinese talent and participation has dwarfed their international counterparts. Mongolian folk rock superstars [Hanggai](http://site.douban.com/hanggai/) arrive at the new [Mao Livehouse]( http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/nightlife/live_music/has/mao-live-shanghai/) on [March 26th](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/82656/) to unleash yet another set of their unique grasslands folk-meets-punk, while Yunnan minority folk rock quartet [Shan Ren](http://site.douban.com/shanren/) play on [March 25th](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/82654/); then of course there’s the [Maybe Mars Showcase](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/82652/) featuring [AV Okubo](http://site.douban.com/avokubo), [Snapline]( http://site.douban.com/snapline), [Duck Fight goose](http://site.douban.com/duckfightgoose) and [Pairs](http://site.douban.com/pairs) on [March 19th](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/82652/), and the arrival of [Gala](http://site.douban.com/gala/) on April 3rd, a band that’s earned considerable crossover success despite their penchant for Beatles covers and the occasional appearance of “Suicide is Painless” in their live sets. Whatever your musical poison, well aside from metal, punk, hard rock, glam, or anything other than indie rock and folk, JUE 2011 is set to once again revive Shanghai’s live scene for a couple weeks. In other news: Wednesday March 9th [The Eagles](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/80415/) @ the [Mercedes Benz Arena](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/film-and-stage/theater/has/culture-center/): Diamond-selling 70’s rockers led by Cleveland’s finest Joe Walsh and everyone’s favorite boy of summer Don Henley, make their first, and possibly last, trip to China. Luckily no one sent the memo to Dan Fogleberg. Show starts at 7:30pm. RMB 350 – 2,580. [Bottlesmoker](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/83315/) @ Yuyintang: Depeche-Mode cover duo stop by YYT for a night of electronic rock and pop. Show starts at 9pm. RMB 40. Thursday, March 10th [China 5](http://site.douban.com/china5/) @ Yuyintang: Chinese rockers swing through the ‘Tang for a night of distorted tunes. Show starts at 9pm. RMB 30. Friday, March 11th Rock Hero featuring [Bremen](http://site.douban.com/rockbremen/) @ [Live Bar](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/nightlife/live_music/has/livebar/): Shanghai Brit-pop trio play up in Yangpu with help from [Rest in Peace](http://site.douban.com/RestinPeace/) and [Broken Promises](http://site.douban.com/brokenpromises/). Expect some serious dance moves and pyrotechnics; it’s still unknown if Lil’ John will show up for a version of “Yeah.” Show starts at 7:30pm. RMB 280 – 1,680. [The Fever Machine & Friends: Shanghai vs. Nanjing](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/82530/) @ Yuyintang: Shanghai’s [The Fever Machine](http://site.douban.com/thefevermachine) and [Friend or Foe](http://site.douban.com/friendorfoe) team up with [Old Doll](http://site.douban.com/olddoll) and [Micoo](http://site.douban.com/miku) from Nanjing for a rippin’ night of rock, punk, ska and grunge.
