The Look: Accessories are a Girl's Best Friend

Accentuate an outfit with timeless, statement-making pieces

We live in a world where trends come and go in the blink of an eye; it's hopeless to even attempt to keep up with them. Rather than spend time and inordinate amounts of money collecting pieces that end up in the back of your closet by next week, learn to avoid blindly following click-bait articles like "Top 33 Must-Have Fall Trends" and focus on developing and honing your own sense of style instead.

The Look: Accessories are a Girl's Best Friend

My own style is minimalistic, but I add interest through accessories. All of my go-to pieces can be described as: simple, timeless, and statement-making. I believe that with simplicity comes sophistication, with timelessness comes everlasting style, and with bold statements comes unforgettable impact.

One of my favorite accessories, a black head wrap (RMB500) from Korea, is the perfect combination of those three criteria. Not only does it take a look up to the next level, it's also effortless. It saves time and helps disguise a bad hair day.

Since I'm not one to lug around heavy tote bags—everyone knows that the bigger the bag, the more sh*t we end up carrying—when I came across the Nicholas K Harness Bag (RMB3,500) during my summer travels in Europe, I knew I had to have it. It's worn like a vest with compartments lined around the bottom, making it one of the most functional items in my wardrobe. It can easily be thrown over anything and has just enough space to fit all my necessities. It's perfect for running errands around town as it's hands-free and practical. It also brings a touch of edginess to any look, an added bonus.

And lastly, this stunning necklace and ring set (RMB4,800) is yet another favorite. It comes from Canadian designer Angie Wu of AWÜ Fine Jewelry, who is based in Shanghai. She's well-known for her contemporary pieces, and does custom requests alongside her own collections (RMB380-RMB5,000). She draws inspiration from her diverse cultural ties, giving us intimate peeks into her worldview through her designs, which lean towards architectural surfaces and mathematical patterns. They're the perfect combination of simplicity and elegance, and certainly leave an impression; it's why I immediately fell in love with her work.

While some of these items may not fit into your budget, it doesn't mean they're unattainable. There are plenty of similar pieces out there for every style and price point. The key is to find things that not only resonate with you but are also able to withstand the test of time.
