The New and Easy Way to Make a Payment on Taobao

**Well City Weekenders, we've got good news and bad news for you. The good news is that we've discovered a super easy way to make a payment on Taobao. The bad news is that all of your savings are about to disappear. We were gutted when Taobao took away the bianlitong payment method off the website. We tried all other forms of payment methods and even ended up [setting up online banking](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/articles/blogs-shanghai/expat-affairs/updated-how-to-make-a-payment-on-taobao/), which wasn't that difficult to do. But let's face it - none of you were going to run out there and do the same thing. So we are happy to introduce you to the 拉卡拉 [lakala](http://lakala.com/) payment method. So what is it and how do we use it? Read on, my friends ...** Bye bye online banking, hello 拉卡拉 lakala
One of our lovely friends, Melissa Brzycki, gave us this hot tip about the 拉卡拉 lakala system. So a big thank you to her! The 拉卡拉 lakala machines can be found in a variety of convenience stores around Shanghai (mostly at 7-ELEVEN, All-Days and Kedi). They look exactly like POS machines that you'll find at the counter of a shop. Check out the photo further down. The machines are mostly used to pay household bills, but they have just opened them up to Taobao payments. It's easy and quick. Here are the steps. A few things to remember:
- You need to carry out all payment transactions using Internet Explorer; it won't work on Firefox or Chrome.
- We are not liable for any financial loss you may face after becoming addicted to buying stuff on Taobao
Making a payment
The first couple of steps on Taobao are still the same. If you've never explored Taobao, you obviously haven't been to our website before. Check out [how to setup an account](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/articles/blogs-shanghai/expat-affairs/taobao-101-creating-an-account/), [how to search the website](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/articles/blogs-shanghai/expat-affairs/taobao-101-searching-and-selecting-an-item/) and [how to select the address and delivery method](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/articles/blogs-shanghai/expat-affairs/taobao-101-selecting-address-and-delivery/) to get clued up. Once you've found what you want to buy, input your address details and move on to select a payment method. You'll come to a page that looks something like this:
You will notice that the page has four tabs. On each tab is a different payment method. You want to hit the third tab.

------
The first option on the third tab is the 拉卡拉 lakala. Select it and hit the orange button.

------
You'll be taken to the page above showing your a summary of your purchase. Hit the highlighted blue text to enter your phone number.

------
Enter your phone number here. Within 60 seconds, you'll be sent a message containing your transaction number (交易号) and payment amount (交易金额). Which means that you don't even have to write anything down.

------
Then you go to a convenience store and use one of the 拉卡拉 machines. Everything is still in Chinese, but it's easy.

------
You press "3" for the third option (pay for a Taobao purchase).

-------
Then hit "1". Then you need to press the red confirm (确认) button.

-------
Then you should be at a screen where you can enter a number, your transaction number (交易号.) After you enter it, press the red confirm button.

--------
Then you enter the amount, and press confirm again.

---------
Next is your cell phone number, confirm again.

-------
Then all the information will show up, and you press confirm again.

--------
After this, it will do a bunch of processing, and take you to a screen where it charges you a couple RMB for using the machine. Confirm the extra charge, and then swipe your bank card, enter your password.

------
Press confirm again when it's all over to print a receipt. And you're done! You've successfully made a payment on Taobao. Was that hard? Easy? Let us know in the comments below.

Hey Guys, I guess ShanghaiJoker, is China 's Only English Speaking Taobao Agent ,which Runned by EXPAT Foreign Guys so it is very easy to communicate with them and make the order. They also experts in Speaking chinese, they also have the chinese staffs. One of my friend recomend, ShanghaiJoker from South Africa, they are also their clients, Now i ordered a bulk of dresses ,shoes, eyewears all i get it for unimaginable price. Most of the Taobao Agents choose the suppliers by them selves and hiding you the offers and also make some profits in that. But ShanghaiJoker, ask you to choose the products by clients, if you wish they also send you the Product reference Weblinks from TaoBao (eacs reference contain, more then 10 to 20 supplier details) , so you can choose as per your wish and budget. so everything is open here. they charge you 5 % servcie charge.(more then 500 Rmb) if less then 500 rmb they charge you 10 %. I saw that the other day. Will investigate and create a new post!

Ahh, the scramble for the slice of the eMoney (aka digital currency) pie here by the various (biz) fractions. Say, you think these guys are innovative enough to use digital currency as a by pass for the recent Sichuan earthquake victims? i.e. delivery the self-saving power/ability to the victims to minimise abuses. ;)

bertemigasp

Help Claire ! I just found out that they replaced the old lakala machines by brand new digital ones this week. I have no idea how to use it. I asked for help in convenient stores but the staff did not want to help me... Do you have any idea how it works ?

Strange, when I check out there are only two options, savings card and credit card, there is no lakala option... Anyone else get this too?

xanniex

Is this new? I thought there was a way to pay via convenient store kiosks for years now. This technique sounds like more of a hassle than the "wang hui e" post office method that I used all the time before setting up online banking. At the post office you just fill out a form and you can deposit as much money into your Alipay account as you want, but they do charge a .5% fee, minimum of 2rmb fee and not sure what the maximum is. If you're not so good at Chinese penmanship, you can ask for a stack of the slips at the post office and then ask a friend to fill in the address details (though accuracy is not required unless you want to recover a lost slip).

@kitokia you might need to call Taobao and have them set up a password for that... They are pretty good on the phone with that sort of request!

Thank you so much for introducing this easy option. I have tried it out and my book finally came. But I do not know how to go through 确认收货, because it asks for the 支付密码 and because I paid through 拉卡拉,I do not really have another password registered in 支付宝. Could anyone help me out???
vdewey's picture

clairebared: It can be used for everything because it's just putting money in your account. You don't pay for each item individually. So for example, you put 2000 yuan on the wang hui yi, then you put in the redemption code on your taobao account and keep using it til your money runs out. I don't see how they wouldn't accept it. The money is not going anywhere. I've been using this system for 3 years and purchase a lot on taobao and have never come across any problems.

Good point vdewey! The post office is a good option, but in my experience I've found that it can't be used for every item on Taobao. Plus, there are convenience stores on every corner! It could be worth another step-by-step post though to introduce it to people...

How is this easier than going to the post office and getting a wang hui yi? Isn't it time consuming to pay for things one item at a time?

oljackburton

The young girl at the Fabric market where I purchase all my Prada accessories would be so disappointed if I did that. On the other hand Gold Chains, Adidas Track Suits and Gold Gazelles are a definite tao bao order. .

Now you can Taobao her a Prada purse!

oljackburton

Thanks - now I can give this to my friends so they don't pester my poor Taiwanese girlfriend with their orders.

narsfweasels

Just as I thought... no wine gums on the list. In fact, some other fellow using the name "narsfweasels" also remarked on this as well. Smart chap.

narsfweasels

No, I don't remember that post, but I *do* remember not paying any specific attention to it. So I'll take a look now!

There are a lot of great Taobao stores selling imported foods. Remember this post? http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/articles/blogs-shanghai/style/taobao-snack-attack/

Haha yes, actual pig lard

What, like actual proper pig fat lard? I could use that for roasting potatoes and vegetables instead of this vile sticky chemical masquerading as vegetable oil.

Great post! I am even buying my ocean spray dried cranberries (craisins) in bulk now via taobao! I buy them for Rmb80 online for a massive sack.
