Crepes, galettes, good coffee (and a very good chai latte), organic wines by the glass, and eggy sandwiches all in one space on Anfu Lu? It’s the all-day brunch fanatic’s dream come true. It’s at the heart of the expat neighborhood, housed in a bright exposed-concrete-and-wood space on Anfu Lu. Order the Far West (RMB98), Egg Cocotte & Dips (RMB45), and a strong coffee. Address: B013, B2, Gopher Plaza, 757 Mengzi Lu (near Zhongshan Nan Yi Lu) 蒙自路757号歌斐中心B213号 (近中山南一路)
Healthy and affordable Chinese food? You don't say. Mi Xiang Yuan is operated by Anthony Zhao, proprietor of hot pot restaurant Holy Cow. The concept is simple: quick serve classics with high quality rice at affordable prices (sets start at RMB35) for white collar workers. Think Kungpao Chicken, Teriyaki Chicken, hongshaorou (braised pork belly), luroufan (braised diced pork in soy sauce), and more, over high quality grain. The mall location isn't appealing, but we're quick to navigate Ele.me. Read more about Mi Xiang Yuan here.

Big name chef Yannick Alleno opens a bistro in a mall complex. It's not your typical mall restaurant, and the food more than makes up for the stiff decor. Expect charcuteries, terrines, and foie, but also steaks with time-tested sauces, a hearty chicken fricassee, and excellent desserts. Click here to read our review.

It's a massive brew pub under the masthead of popular Japanese craft beer brand Hitachino Beer Nest in Sinan Mansion with four floors housing a beer bar, yakitori, barbecue and lounge. Not every floor or section is stellar—you should be spending most of your time at teppanyaki bar and top floor whisky bar. Food is good and affordable despite the area, and the selection of beer, whiskey, sake are plentiful. Read our review here.

When the world's biggest Starbucks Roastery opened on Nanjing Xi Lu, you can bet your bottom dollar that there were lines all around the corner. That was early December, and we're about to enter the dead of winter. Last we saw, there weren't any lines at all. Take the opportunity to traverse the beautifully designed space (2,700sqm of it), see how they process and roast beans, queue for coffee, and get a croissant or two from the Princi aisle. See more pictures here.
Address: 361 Kangding Lu (near Shaanxi Bei Lu) 康定路361号 (近陕西北路)
Archaeology is a new contender in the local mixology market, helmed by bartenders from speakeasy backgrounds—Allen Hsu, formerly of Flask (coke-bottle machine for an entrance that's now moved to Xiangyang Nan Lu) and Allen Fang of Barules (the other hidden entrance bar, marked by a telephone booth). Drinks are tasty, and some more inventive than others. Watch though, cocktails are pricey, upwards of RMB100 a pop.

Barraco is a new Brazilian bar around the corner from Fuxing Park that’s all about the beach vibe, no matter how cold it is in the Hai. The tiny, colorful shack is perfect for a casual, early night's start with caipirinhas and a few bar bites. Read our review here.
