***Tom Mangione and Nick Muzycka dropped by the CW office to tell us about [Open Goat](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/events/74426/), their new noise experiment happening this Saturday. These guys are calling on all Shanghai creatives to get plunking, drawing, plonking, wheezing and hooting all in the name of creativity. ***
What is Open Goat?
TM: In college, I had a friend who would gather people in his basement with all kinds of different instruments and they’d plunk, plonk, wheeze, hoot and bang for hours. He’d record it and try to make it into something musical. We were philosophy majors and this prompted some unwieldy discussion about the nature of chaos and order. I thought the idea was damn cool. So I stole it. NM: I’m very fond of stealing ideas in general and was quick to jump on Tom’s bandwagon.
Why do you think people will be interested?
TM: The all-inclusive, DIY style of the event will appeal to people in Shanghai. In an elitist and consumerist culture defined by who you know and how much money you make, it’s nice to have a place where you can express yourself however you want without worrying. NM: It’s a relaxed, unpretentious and potentially rewarding activity and a novel way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
What will you do with the recordings and artworks produced at the night?
TM: The plan is to get local DJs to remix the recordings, and photographers to take pictures of the artworks. If we get something good, we might make a CD and sell it if we
have another event.
