Forget moon cakes, folks; this might be one of the stranger Mid-Autumn Festival celebrations we’ve seen taking place this weekend.
New comedy Moon Sex Moon celebrates the Harvest Moon with a story of love and sex between six astronauts on the Moon, which you can experience firsthand this weekend over four staged readings.
In this new play, six astronauts from the future are sent to the lunar base by their respective countries to help colonize the Moon as a back-up plan for when humanity inevitably screws up their home planet. The astronauts are from China, US, India, Nigeria, Chile and Russia.
Long story short: Earth becomes history, and the astronauts discover they’re the only living members of humanity left. What follows is a saucy tale of hilarity and sexual intrigue - hormones run high, cabin fever runs amok and no one is happy. Probably a lot like what would happen if you put the Olympic Village in outer space.
This weekends’ performances are halfway between a staged reading and a full production, what director Leila TahaBurt calls a “workshop production.” The actors will have scripts but costumes and props as well, moving fluidly between six different languages.
“If people’s reactions over the weekend [at The Market Grand Opening Party] were any indication,” says TahaBurt. “I think people will love it. It’s totally outrageous and so much fun.”
