If you haven't finalized your weekend plans, this looks like a great thing to pencil in. The premiere screening of the annual Shanghai 48 Hour Film Project is slated for this Sunday at Central Studios.
The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and a team make a movie—write, shoot, and edit—in just 48 hours. On Friday night, teams draw a genre from a hat. They are then given a character, prop and line to include in their films. On Sunday night, in a wild dash to the drop off event, the film is turned in - and teams celebrate. The film is then screened at a local theater in front of an audience of filmmakers, friends and families.
Basically, interested participants get together on a kick-off meeting to draw lots on what sort of film they'll be making, then are given literally 48 hours to write, shoot and produce said film. The point of this is to level out the playing field between industry professionals and newcomers—everyone is given equal opportunity and the same amount of time for their projects.
This year's kick-off meeting was held last Friday, with a total of 20 films submitted. The screening for these films will be held at Central Studios this Sunday; there will be two showings, one at 1pm-4pm, the other at 6pm-9pm. Each film runs a minimum of four minutes to a maximum of seven. Entrance is RMB80 per person, tickets available here.
A winner will be chosen that very night, and the winning film will go on to compete with winners from other cities in the Filmapalooza contest. The winner of the Filmapalooza will be able to screen their film at the Cannes Short Film Corner.
It's a great opportunity to go show your support for Shanghai's budding film writers and directors. It's for a good cause too, all proceeds from the screening goes towards The Library Project, an initiative that donates libraries to rural primary schools and orphanages in Asia.
