ShanghaiPRIDE: An event of shameless proportions

Finally, the best week in the year to be gay has arrived–ShanghaiPRIDE. Attention straight people: PRIDE is the perfect time to try swinging the other way for a week. Give it a go! Think of the great stories you’ll have to tell the grand kids. There’s the instant access to underground homo subculture and you won’t have to pay extra to get into gay parties.
I am kidding of course. You’ll see in my public record I voted “no” to a hetero taxation system at homo events. ShanghaiPRIDE week (June 7–14) is open to all. Everyone is welcome–except those with bad mohawks.
PRIDE week’s solid lineup offers something for everyone: panel discussions, literary hour, film screenings, theater productions, alcohol, food, drag queens, fashion shows, face painting, Capoeira, tarot cards, kung fu, weddings and DJs. Spread out all over the city in a variety of venues, it conveniently delivers homosexuality right to your doorstep (or close by, at least). After an event, you may wake up the next day feeling a little bit gay. If this happens and you are female, give me a call. We’ll grab a drink.
Planning this monumental week has definitely taught me a few things, first and foremost that homos like to party. The fact that the language gods designated us “gay” is quite appropriate. Homos don’t clutter our to-do lists with pesky hetero items like “plan wedding” and “reproduce.” Many homos are content playing from childhood into retirement, taking an occasional break to plan large festivals where they will have numerous opportunities to remove their shirts. Bravo homos, I applaud your efforts in lightening the mood of life in general.
Finally, I learned that Shanghai is home to some fabulous queers and friendlies. We have run into a few obstacles, but for the most part the Shanghai business community and the LGBT community have come out of the woodwork to support this event. Our ShanghaiLGBT moderators and other volunteers are working around the clock for free, and all profits go to an AIDS charity.
Bravo, Shanghai. I salute your refreshing openness and dedication to helping paint the town pink for a week that will go down in history as Shanghai’s first gay pride festival ever.
