Shanghai's Best Weekend Events

A queer dance party, reggae at C's, and a live instrumental at Celia


For the first weekend of 2018 it looks like live music and dance parties are the move. Let go of your inhibitions with Elevator’s Medusa, a queer dance party for all. Techno haven Celia is branching out with a live instrumental set featuring harp, drum, and strings. On the flip side, Yuyintang and Bandai Namco Dreambase Hall are hosting bands with distinct rock and roll sounds.

Whai was founded in 2012 by four artists living in Beijing. The band draws inspiration from Trip-Hop, Chinese folk, Psychedelic, Avantgarde, Experimental, Rock, and many more genres. WHAI's music is dark yet dreamy, transporting those who listen to a mysterious world where anything is possible. RMB80-100.

Mando Diao is an alternative rock band from Borlänge, Sweden. Since 2002, Mando Diao has released eight studio albums that have sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide. The 2013 album Infruset was a cultural phenomenon in Sweden, going platinum and spending 17 weeks at number one. Known for their classic rock and roll sound, they’ve drawn heavy influences from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Kinks. RMB240 pre-sale, RMB300 at the door.

Shanghai's glitter-soaked monthly queer rave returns to dissolve boundaries in dance floor sweat with back-to-back house music sessions. Celebrate eye-closing dance floor moments with residents Michael Cignarale and Mau Mau. RMB50 at the door.

Harley's is hosting Rebellion, a punk band with influences of The Exploited and The Casualties, along with UK native Jane Nicola Douglas, a soul-folk roots artist and songwriter. It's a bit of everything. Free entry.

Jiashan Market was the first artisan food and crafts market in Shanghai and has been running continuously since 2012. This winter, they will be bringing in more "pantry" vendors, with goods people can stock up on and enjoy in the warmth and comfort of their homes between markets. More than 15 vendors will brave the winter cold, including Sparrow for olives, fruit, and cheese, Edward's for German-style sausages, Ecological Farms for organic vegetables, Jonas Emil for coffee, Ben's Bakery for cakes, Mr. Waffles, BottlesXO, Shanghai Young Bakers, fashion brands, health and beauty products, and more.


Glam's Monthly Vegan Brunch

Following a successful collaboration with Hong Kong based vegan cafe Grassroots Pantry, Glam has been inspired to continue with offerings of food that's geared towards a healthy lifestyle. They're introducing an all vegan brunch, to be offered on the first Sunday of every month. The six-course menu includes an amuse bouche, a super food salad, roasted cauliflower, sweet potato and cassava gnocchi, main of roasted Lebanese eggplant stuffed with wild rice and lentils, and a dessert of raw chocolate tart. The brunch set is RMB328 and includes a fresh juice or smoothie.
