X Japan Tribute Party | Taste Tomorrow | Joey Bada$$


Hit up Harley's for a documentary on Japan's most successful and influential visual kei rock / metal band, dabble in a little indie pop with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, or catch American rapper Joey Bada$$, who will be tearing up Arkham's stage come Saturday night.


Little Creatures Opening Party

Where: Little Creatures, 158 Julu Lu (near Ruijin Yi Lu) 巨鹿路158号 (近瑞金一路)

When: Fri, 6pm

This Australia Day, join Little Creatures for the opening of their craft beer Brewer's Lab at Found 158. Get special prices on draught and bottles, plus complimentary Aussie snacks from 6-8pm, live music, circus performances, and free Little Creatures swag for early arrivals.


X Japan Tribute Party at Harley's

Where: Harley's, B1/F, 365 Nandan Dong Lu (near Caoxi Lu) 南丹东路365号 (近漕溪路)

Formed as a speed metal band in the early 80's, X JAPAN attracted attention not only for its music, but also its popularization of visual kei. The rock / metal band, one of the most influential and successful in Japanese history, has just released their documentary WE ARE X. The documentary will be showing at Harley's at 8pm, followed by a live show by visual rock band NIL.


The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Where: Bandai Namco Shanghai Base Dream Hall, 179 Yichang Lu (near Jiangning Lu) 宜昌路179号 (近江宁路)

When: Fri, 8:30pm

Brooklyn shoe gaze band The Pains of Being Pure at Heart hits Shanghai with a night at Bandai Namco Shanghai Base Dream Hall. Standing on the foreground of America's indie scene, the group has been praised as being one of the best indie-pop bands since the late 2000's. The music is crisp and effervescent, with a sound massive enough to match big-hearted emotions. RMB150 pre-sale, RMB180 at the door.


Super Attractive Ghetto Blaster at UNICO

Where: UNICO, 2/F, 3 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu (near Guangdong Lu) 中山东一路3号2楼 (近广东路)

Clémie, Jolie, Soic Miterne, Keint and Jibé are bringing a full-on flambé of sounds for a journey into a universe that will swallow you whole and never let you return. These guys have gathered vintage boomboxes for an alternative party concept that pulls together tasty beats music, art, photography and creativity into a force majeure that will have you dropping your petit pois on the dancefloor. NINE THIRTY happy hour from 9:30pm-10:30pm for free-flow gin and tonics. Free entry.


SHFT. presents Bailo at Arkham

Where: Arkham, 158 Julu Lu (near Ruijin Yi Lu) 巨鹿路158号 (近瑞金一路)

When: Fri, 10pm

SHFT is back for 2018 with an EP release on Barong Family with support from DJ Snake, Borgore, Herobust, and more. Bailo has quickly risen up to become one of the most promising upcoming producers in the Dubstep/Trap scene, so this event promises to be a hot one. Tickets are RMB80 presale and RMB120 at the door.


Taste Tomorrow Presented by Hatchery

Where: WeWork, 696 Weihai Lu (near Maoming Lu) 威海路696号 (近茂名路)

When: Sat 4pm

New food models, opportunities, and obstacles challenge the way we think, eat, drink, buy, and create. Hatchery—China's first culinary incubator—is bringing together cross-cultural foodies, drink enthusiasts, innovators, entrepreneurs, financiers, millennials, and media to talk and Taste Tomorrow. Joey Bada$$ at Arkham

When: Sat, 10pm

American rapper Joey Bada$$ is making his way to Shanghai for an electrifying show at Arkham. Heavily influenced by the style of heavyweight rappers of the 1990's the likes of Nas Tupac and Andre 3000, Joey's music embodies the saying "the personal is political", with songs detailing America's long history with racism, along with commentary on the country's current political climate. Pre-sale tickets are sold out, RMB380 at the door.


Bassment at The Mansion

Where: The Mansion, B-18 Dynasty Villa, 851 Hongjing Lu (near Yan'an Xi Lu) 虹井路851号B-18 (近延安西路)

When: Sat, 10pm

The first Bassment party of the year sees the crew making their debut at The Mansion. Three DJs will play two hour sets.


Chinatown Circus at Bar Rouge

Where: Bar Rouge, 7/F, 18 Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu (near Nanjing Dong Lu) 中山东一路18号7楼 (近南京东路)

When: Sat, 10pm

Bar Rouge and MVP EVENTS is hosting a Chinatown Circus themed party. Free entrance for all until midnight with RSVP to events@mvpshanghai.com, otherwise cover is RMB100. Dress code is Oriental Rouge.


SHFT x Le Baron presents WhatSoNot (OWSLA)

Where: Le Baron, 7/F, 20 Donghu Lu (near Huaihai Lu) 东湖路20号7楼 (近淮海路)

When: Sat, 10pm

SHFT is teaming up with Le Baron to bring WhatSoNot to town. The OWSLA flag holder has had major collabs with RL Grime, among others.


DKNSTRKT Launch at Daliah

Where: Daliah, 408 Shaanxi Bei Lu (near Beijing Xi Lu) 陕西北路408号 (近北京西路)

When: Sun, 4pm

DKNSTRKT ("deconstruct") is a collective of gender-fluid drag lovers who believe that a person's gender is not limited to just male or female. DKNSTRKT believes drag is for all and desire to create a more diverse drag community. Whatever your sexuality or gender identity, if you want to try drag, don't miss this. This event is hosted by drag queen, Kimberly Kumswell with performances by newcomers Erica and Cocosanti. The event will also include drag makeovers by three of Shanghai's drag performers: Fantasia Valentina, Dorian T. Fisk, and Mo Meaux, as well as the premiere of Extravaganza, a new documentary exploring Shanghai's drag scene presented by CINEMQ. Free entry.


Shinedoe at Dada

Where: Dada, 115 Xingfu Lu (near Fahuazhen Lu) 幸福路115号 (近法华镇路)

When: Sat, 10:30pm

Over the course of two decades, Shinedoe has carved a path in the world of house and techno that is entirely her own. Her relentless passion for the finer elements of electronic dance music has seen her win over hearts and minds in every espect she has turned her attention to, from her transformative DJ performances, authoritative products, and curated label Intacto.
