Do we need more luxurious five-star hotels in Shanghai? Apparently we do, because here are six more set to debut in 2018.
Where: 6161 Yuanjiang Lu 元江路6161号
The fourth Chinese Aman (and the 31st internationally), is the luxury hotel chain's most ambitious and impressive project to date. Setting aside the fact that it is the biggest Aman in the world, and China's most expensive hotel, the Amanyangyun is also the culmination of a 15-year conservation intiative between Chinese businessman Ma Dadong and the Russian hotel brand. The philanthropic endeavor saw the relocation of a forest of 2,000-year old Camphor trees, and the dismantling and reconstructing of 50 Ming and Qing dynasty houses, all transported 700km away from their initial fate of being razed to the ground for a new reservoir in Jiangxi.
The 50 reconstructed houses has since been turned into 26 antique villas and 24 one-bedroom suites, accompanied by five dining venues that include Chinese restaurant LAZHU, Italian restaurant ARVA, and Japanese restaurant NAMA. Guests can unwind in the sprawling Aman Spa, completed with 10 treatment rooms, bathhouses, as well as a state-of-the-art gym, and indoor and outdoor pools.
Bulgari Hotel Shanghai
Where: 33 Henan Bei Lu 河南北路33号
Situated just a few minutes away from the Bund neighborhood, included in part of the visionary Suhe Creek development, the Bulagri Hotel Shanghai is the Bulgari's second Asian location and fourth worldwide. It takes up the top eight floors of the Bulgari building, and offers 82 rooms, divided into 63 guest rooms and 19 suites
The Bulgari Hotel Shanghai has two dining venues and four bars on its premises. That includes contemporary Italian restaurant Il Ristorante, a gorgeous triple-height venue with sprawling foor-to-ceiling windows, and an outstanding 500-strong wine list, and Il Bar on the top floor, with a private terrace and the iconic centrepiece oval bar that is a signature of all Bulgari locations. To truly impress, head on up to their rooftop bar La Terraza, affording 180-degree vistas of the stunning Shanghai skyline.
The Shanghai EDITION
Where: 199 Nanjing Dong Lu 南京东路199号
The latest hotel to join the glitzy Bund neighborhood is The Shanghai EDITION. Located on the corner of Nanjing Dong Lu and Henan Lu, it's a unique combination of two separate towers—a refurbished high-rise and a neighboring art-deco building—with a podium connecting the two. The hotel features 145 guest rooms and 10 levels of public space.
The hotel will have nine F&B outlets—a nightclub with a rooftop terrace, three lounge bars, two rooftop bars, and three signature restaurants, among which include a Cantonese restaurant, and Sosharu by Jason Atherton, modeled after his London restaurant of the same name. What we know so far about the F&B in this hotel is that Scott Melvin (executive chef of Commune Social) will head up all F&B operations as executive chef, and Christopher Pitts, previously Executive Chef of Table No. 1, will also be joining the team.
Anandi Hotel and Spa
Where: 7 Linhong Lu 临虹路7号
The Anandi Hotel and Spa, part of the prestigious Leading Hotels of the World consortium, is dedicated to providing the ultimate healing and holistic experience. Every detail of the hotel was designed with rejuvenation and well-being in mind; the building layout is modelled after the traditional Tai Chi Eight Diagrams, while guest rooms feature green technology and swanky negative ion bedding.
Main attractions here include a wellness center, hot spring bath, and TCM house, an organic shop and restaurant, plus a 1,500sqm outdoor wedding lawn completed with a wedding chappel.
The Sukhothai Shanghai
Where: 380 Weihai Lu 威海路380号
The Sukhothai Shanghai, an extension of the famed Sukhothai Bangkok, and only the second property of the brand, is slated for a March opening as part of the HKRI Taikoo Hui development. The hotel is made up of 170 guest rooms and 31 suites for a total of 201 rooms.
The hotel offers five dining and drinking options, including La Scala, a concept from their Bangkok property, where they will be serving innovative Italian cuisine by Theodor Falser or Michelin acclaim. Other venues include URBAN Cafe, serving an eclectic variety of dishes infused with South East Asian, Oriental, and other international influences, and The ZUK Bar, a quick al fresco option for the warmer months.
The Middle House
Where: 366 Shimen Yi Lu 石门一路366号
Joining the Sukhothai Shanghai at the HKRI Taikoo Hui development is The Middle House, the fourth hotel under the Swire Hotel's The House Collective brand. Named due to its location in the middle of one of Shanghai's most historic neighborhoods, "Dazhongli", interiors are by Milan-based designer Piero Lissoni, while the architecture is by Lissoni Associati and Wong and Ouyang.
The Middle House will offer 111 rooms and 102 serviced apartments. They will also be bringing New York-based chef Gray Kunz's acclaimed Café Gray Deluxe from Hong Kong to Shanghai, showcasing a unique blend of international cuisines. Peter Lin, previously Senior Sous Chef at Sir Elly's, The Peninsula Shanghai, will be the Chef De Cuisine at Cafe Gray Swire Hotel.
