Sports Tested: Aerial Yoga

Suspend yourself from the ceiling and get your prana flowing at Just Yoga

Boasting two studios, Just Yoga offers a comprehensive roster of yoga, mediation and dance classes—from vinyasa flow to bollywood dance. We decided to go check out their Aerial Yoga class.

The Class

Just Yoga's 60-minute Aerial Yoga class begins mildly with a series of gentle standing variations before progressing into more adventurous inversions, seated poses, balancing postures and meditations—all using an aerial hammock attached to the ceiling by two metal hooks. The class promises a deep stretch, stronger, more elongated muscles, and enhanced blood circulation. This technique was initially conceived to compliment the practice of acrobats and gymnasts, but in recent years has trended its way into a widely popular class that accommodates larger groups of students. Classes take place bi-weekly. Ours was led by Iris Chen, fouder of i-fly yoga studio, an intimate aerial yoga studio on Changle Lu. Teacher of over ten years, Iris led us through sequences with confidence and supportively readjusted alignment and postures when required. Her calming presence and expertise allowed our fears to melt away as we navigated the series of acrobatic postures.

The Facilities

You'll find Just Yoga's Xujiahui location in the Tianping Hotel. Comprising a meditation room with a heated floor, two yoga classrooms, an aerial studio and facilities for showering and changing—ethnic designs, ornaments and bright colors project a zen atmosphere throughout. The aerial room is bright and minimalistically decorated with 12 hammocks and mats. Just Yoga's Ganesha logo, is displayed brightly on the back wall encapsulated in a beautiful orange mandala, giving light and color to the studio.

The Experience

In addition to being a suprisingly intense workout what we love about the class is the feeling of utter liberation that dangling upside down provides. As the fear of this unknown territory subsides, you begin to embrace your inner child as you advance into deeper back bends and hip openings that gravity usually allows for. Our favorite part of the class is the concluding shavasina, in which you lie down and meditate for five to ten minutes. The sensation of fully reclining in a suspended cocoon of relief that you survived is particularly satisfying.

While aerial yoga classes are included in the membership fees for RMB4,800/half-year and RMB7,800/full year, drop-ins go for RMB200.
