Three Books for the Month of November

Cozy up with one of these titles this winter.

Little Fires Everywhere
This story of dualities is set in a whitewashed Cleveland suburb in the late 1990s.  At the center of the story are the Richardson family, a clan whose lives  are turned upside down when they rent their adjacent duplex out to Mia Warren, a single mother and visual artist with a mysterious past. She and her daughter challenge the family’s ideas about what exactly a family should look like. When a local family decides to adopt an abandoned baby of Chinese descent whose mother abruptly changes her mind, more cultural and racial issues come to the forefront. It’s this subplot that turns the book from a mere novel, to a think piece on interracial adoption and class issues in middle America.
Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng is available at Amazon.com for RMB86

Poppies of Iraq
Told in vignettes, Findakly recalls various points of her childhood, time spent memorizing the Quran, family days and her personal take on an increasingly more dangerous life and culture that changed over the course of her 14 years in the country. Eventually, when things got too hot, the family high-tailed it to France, where Findakly came of age while simultaneously becoming more removed from the life she once knew. In a sense, the citizens of Iraq have become the forgotten people of a country whose political issues have dominated much of their narrative. Findakly and her cartoonist husband have found a way to create a light-hearted and whimsical viewpoint on what it means to be Iraqi.
Poppies of Iraq by Bridgette Findakly is available at Amazon.com for RMB86

What Happened?
In her newest book, Hillary Clinton tackles a question that has been on many people’s minds since losing the election last November, “What Happened?”
Said to be one of her most personal memoirs yet, the former Secretary of State throws caution to the wind, giving the public a rare glimpse into her thoughts about the hardships and scrutiny she faced as the first woman nominated for president. It is truly gripping to see the inner workings of a woman who went toe-to-toe with a man such as Donald Trump.
Her story as the first woman to run for president on a major ticket will go down in history as well as the admirable way she continues to rebound following her loss.
What Happened by Hillary Rodham Clinton is available at Amazon.com for RMB119
