Hidden among the bustling souvenir and knick-knack shops of Tianzifang, lifestyle space Leaf Yoga is a welcomed refuge for those in need. Located on the third floor of “The Point,” above R9 private dining and Toast Café, the studio stays true to its name, with plants lining the stairways and a tranquil rooftop terrace overlooking its maze-like surroundings.
Leaf Yoga offers a variety of yoga classes, including private and group sessions, as well as “women’s health sessions,” which cover topics like insomnia, headaches and back and shoulder pain. Prices are steep, with drop-in classes at RMB288 and private classes RMB350, but packages get more reasonable at RMB6,989 for a year. (Contact the studio for more detailed pricing information.)
We dropped by their Basic Yoga class to get a feel for what this studio has to offer.
From the quaint café on the ground floor, to the waiting room on the second and outdoor terrace on the third, there’s no shortage of relaxation space. Lounge chairs are scattered among the common rooms and hot goji berry tea and cups rest on tables. The studio and changing room are exceptionally clean, and the two showers were equipped with shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Towels are provided and so are lockers.
From the moment we entered the studio, surrounded by ambient music and the scent of lemongrass, we felt at ease. The class was full at around 15 people, and our instructor, Lena, was stretching and contorting her body in a way that made us feel she knew what she was doing. We began with some light stretching and a simple series of sun salutations, before moving to deeper stretches and positions to work on strength and balance. Lena was specific about how to move, when to breathe and how we should be feeling, and made a point to walk around the room and gently reposition those who needed extra attention.
While it was a “basic” class, and definitely good for beginners, it was also challenging and suitable for all levels. At the end of the hour-long class, wet with sweat, we lay down in Savasana (corpse pose) and cleared our minds. When it was time to “come back to the room,” we felt noticeably more relaxed, in a better mood and left feeling like we had gotten in a thorough workout.
