The Winners of City Weekend's 2012 Readers' Choice Awards

Last night, Shanghai's dining and nightlife moguls gathered at [Bar Rouge](link) for our annual Readers' Choice Awards. Over 500 people filled the ruby red bar to find out who would take the crowns for Shanghai's best bar and best restaurant. Our hosts for the night, [Bar Rouge](link), won Shanghai's best bar with [el Coctel](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/nightlife/bars/has/el-coctel/) finishing in a close second. The biggest surprise of the night was the winner of Shanghai's best restaurant; French newbies [Cuivre](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/dining/french/has/cuivre/) took the title for 2012. It was a well deserved win for Chef Michael and restaurant manager Fanny, and they also won the award for best newcomer. Some of the more memorable nightlife awards of the evening included [Boxing Cat](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/dining/american/has/boxing-cat-brewery/) for best beer, [The Camel](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/nightlife/bars/has/the-camel-sports-bar/) for best Sports Bar and the [Waldorf](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/nightlife/bars/has/the-long-bar-at-the-waldorf-astoria/) for best hotel bar. For dining, the crowd blew up when the entrepreneurial ladies from [Strictly Cookies](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/dining/delivery/has/strictly-cookies/) and [Spread the Bagel](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/dining/delivery/has/spread-the-bagel/) claimed a couple of titles over the course of the night. But it wasn't just about the awards; people were there to party and people watch. The crowd went wild when the winners of best service, [Hooters](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/dining/american/has/hooters-zunyi/) (yes, you read that right), performed a saucy dance routine. Heatwolves caused quite the stir when they tried to take over the stage halfway through the awards. Luckily, our nightlife editor, Joho, was able to keep them in line. Bob Li was spotted among the crowd, rubbing shoulders with Shanghai's power players. And super chef Craig Willis went up a notch in our books for bringing his mom to the awards as his plus one. Everyone in the crowd was dressed to the nines and our food writer, Kat Velyo, won the award for the evening's top Fashionista. We also have to give a shout out to Brian Offender for his fierce magenta suit. A dishonorable mention goes to the team over at [I Love Shanghai](http://www.cityweekend.com.cn/shanghai/listings/nightlife/bars/has/i-love-shanghai/) for their rather inappropriate fancy dress costumes (photo galleries to come). All in all, the night was a stellar success and the bar was on fire (literally at some stages). We want to thank all of our users who voted, you guys made it count. For the full list of winners, check them out below.

It is true, I must agree with all of you guys that a lot of these categories seem to have been filled by sheer laziness and advertising revenue. I'd also like to point out that SOUTH EAST ASIAN FOOD IS not just Thai food. Come on guys! Love the comment about getting out of the 14kuai cab ride and venturing out! And there seems to be categories missing too. Best service I would have given to Din Tai Fung! They set some nice standards for a medium price ranged restaurant.

"If this is truly representative then it simply suggests that expats seriously need to TRY NEW PLACES!" ....and how long have I been saying this for? Too many of our compatriots exist in these tiresome little grooves between their apartment, the office and the French Concession. Get out their and get real, peep-holes!

nickw

Don't want to be critical but completely agree with Gargantua. Every single year it's the same things. Element Fresh? It's 2012, people. I have to think that a very, very, very small % of expats have actually been to - or genuinely enjoyed - Mr. Mrs. Bund, Park Hyatt etc. If this is truly representative then it simply suggests that expats seriously need to TRY NEW PLACES!

Be interesting if CW come back to the original questions. I mean we all know by now its all aimed for the advertisers. Lets see if the % is for or against the advertisers. Public Poll,,,,my ass !!

I find the results boring and rather predictable. HOF ... again. Element fresh for best brunch? Blaaahh!! But the one that off-pisses the most is the Spicy Chinese category: Pin Chuan, GuYi, and Di Shui Dong. Again. If you'll kindly get off your fat Baozis and venture out of your 14 quai taxi flag fall comfortzone you'll find that the amount of delicious Hunanese, Sichuanese and Guizhonian spots in the city that blow those restaurants away like lazy editors blow goats is too long to list. Just because the menu is in Chinese doesn't mean the place shouldn't be reviewed. Get a Chinese sister site to point you in the right direction, if you must, but dont insult your readership with that lonely planet circa 2004 crap. Best Thai: Simply Thai. What the Faaaaaaaaaa...

I think guys you need to look at the "Editors Pick" for a slightly more honest picture of (a) the deserving and (b) who the CW team would have liked. I'm not going to come out and say that this was biased, but I am certainly surprised that DJ Spanner won the best DJ category, as a particular gripe. And yes, Laris... Hmm.

@fatmerryn69... absolutely agree with what you are saying. The results look like they are so biased! Someone is getting paid somewhere. I would take it a step further and ask: who even nominates the restaurants and bars? When I voted I saw several categor
