China's Best Travel Agencies
Since our Best of Travel issue is coming up (as is a week-long holiday on Oct. 1), I thought I’d write about the unsung heroes of the travel industry: travel agencies which focus on expats (as opposed to inbound tourists). The China Culture Center is totally geared toward expats, run by people with a commitment to comfort and there are no hidden fees. Their trips are short and sweet, perfect for busy expats after a taste of quintessential China, but can feel a little rushed. Country Holidays, a Singaporean outfit, sets the bar for Asia tourism, catering to a more exacting clientele. Their trips (specializing China and Asia) have a very personal feel, with unique touches like dinner in the Taklaman. More expensive, for sure, but you get what you pay for. Classic Travel is not quite in the same category, but they are a go-to option for Southeast Asia beach holidays. For day trips around Shanghai, SISU and BOHDI are unbeatable options (they also happen to the two highest buzzed agencies on the CW website). They scout all the locations personally and know how to have fun. If you’re just after flight plus hotel deals (no itineraries--my personal favorite way to travel), Mandarin Journeys gets good deals on luxury hotels, while Shanghai Great World International Travel Service,China Spring Tour and FASCO are excellent for people on a budget.
