I admit that my commute to work is starting to make me a little bit grumpy in the mornings. Traffic jams, the overly crowded metro and the sweltering sidewalks aren’t really my cup of tea. However, today I thank my lucky stars that I’m not one of the unfortunate few who are stuck in one of the longest traffic jams in history.
Roadworks on the Beijing-Tibet Expressway have trapped thousands of drivers outside the Chinese capital since August 14. The disruption to the flow of traffic is expected to last a further month.
The bumper-to-bumper traffic now stretches for a mind-boggling 100km and 400 police officers have been assigned to the area to quell rising tensions. Vendors are reported to have flocked to the scene and are roadside charging exorbitant prices for tea and noodles.
At least the drivers are getting creative and are finding ways to kill time. It’s reported that drivers are exiting their vehicles to play games of chess and cards with their fellow captives. Some are even requesting concerts be performed on roadside verges. Well when life gives you lemons...
