Cover Graphics - What Do You Think?
After last week's debacle and more angry emails than I've ever gotten (ya'll really are a mafia!), I want to preface this post by saying that I'm not criticizing anyone, City Weekend or our internal artists. As you all know from making it the #1 magazine in town, they have the ability to do many things.
Now, that being said, I'd like to know what you think of the cover graphics of late (Wine Game, pictured right) as opposed to the previous ones a few months ago (Spin City, pictured left).
What do you think? More like the recent? Or the past photos?

ditto. image on the right does nothing at all to catch my eye...

Spin City for sure! Second one looks kinda cheap in my opinion.

This seems to be a simple case of Photos vs. Computer Designed Pictures. Photos will give the readers a real snapshot of what is in the issue, where graphics can make things seem more unrealistic or like a cartoon. However, the readers need to remember that one cannot always have photos for everything.
Yet, the cover of the Wine Game issue was supposed to make the readers think of a game, which I believe was even drawn inside the issue.
I believe that both photos and graphics are ok, as long as they can be tied into the articles contained within the issue. Just don't get hung up on one or the other... sometimes change is good.
On a last note, it seemed that the cover of the Wine Game issue was able to contain more information on the cover than the Spin City one, don't let the cover get too crowded.

Sounds like the photos are a fave - but good point about the area that sometimes leaves for information.
Anyone else?

spin city, of course. no need a second to answer it.

the spin city version looks slicker and i suppose what a reader expects from a magazine cover these days..in that case it is probably a bit more conventional -the bottle image looks a bit comedy- the font, colors and callout- i would assume the artist is playing a bit retro here before the world became so image and style savvy (or is possibly fresh out of college) either way i prefer it
