The city observes three minutes of silence during the first of three days of national mourning
At 14:28 today, Shanghai came to a sullen halt. Flags flown at half-staff and sirens blared through the city as we commemorated the victims of last Monday's massive earthquake in the Sichuan province. In the Ringier office, CW editors fell into an unusual hush as colleagues gathered around the windows to silently take in the (lack of) activity in People's Square. Sirens have never sounded more piercing.
During this period of mourning, public entertainment venues like cinemas and theaters have canceled their shows, and online game and entertainment pages will be redirected to sites that support search and rescue endeavors and pay tribute to the victims in Beichuan. The Olympic torch relay will also be delayed by three days.

The Red Cross has just sent out an urgent message on their website. The following items are needed urgently to aid the victims in Sichuan—quilts & blankets, towels, non-perishable food items, bottled water and general first aid supplies. The Shanghai Red Cross has set up a temporary reception desk at the following locations: Main Gate, 3501 Gonghe Xin Lu(near Changzhong Lu) or Main Gate 150 Shouyang Lu(near Jiangchang Lu. Please contact Tang Zhaoxiong (13601615898) before you go and confirm about when and where you’re sending your donations, so that we can send everything early to Sichuan.
