A few of our Californian friends have been in a tizzy lately over reports that In-N-Out Burger—home of such epicurean delights as the colossal “Animal Style” burger—is opening in Shanghai. Our carnivorous compatriots cannot be blamed for their excitement because 1) there is a huge “Coming Soon” sign on Yanping Lu near Xinzha that looks well, exactly like the In-N-Out sign and 2) In-N-Out burgers are hella good. But we suspected this might be too good to be true and decided to go right to the source.

Here’s what an In-N-Out Burger customer service rep told us by email:

“In response to your question, we hope to expand as far as we can, but do not have any immediate plans for Shanghai at this time. We do hope to continue expanding, but are always careful not to open a new location until we can guarantee the same quality food and service as we provide in our existing locations. But thanks to customers like you, hopefully you will see us in more areas in the future!”
