All of you will be familiar with the Touchmedia video in the back of cabs, encouraging people to stretch and breathe while they are sitting in traffic. The clip became an overnight sensation on weibo (136,000 fans and counting) and the local media were quick to pick up on it. We were so intrigued that we just had to track down the exercise guru in the video. Turns out Touchmedia's Wow Fitness Lady is Nancy Pon. She tells us about Richard Simmons, giant turtles and the possibility of another video.
How did you get involved in the commercial?
The campaign is one of Touch Media’s efforts to enhance people's life. The main issues are the environment, charity and health. Our creative team said that I seemed like a pretty healthy person and asked if I wanted to act in the video. I agreed to do it, but only if they made me look very different.
What do you do when you're not making exercise videos?
I'm the GM of Touch Events. We do nation-wide media events. Back in 2009, City Weekend called me "The Garbage Lady" so ever since then, I’ve been trying to get back into the magazine! (laughs)
Where are you from?
I'm from Turtleford, Saskatchewan (Canada). Home of the world’s largest turtle. The sign into the city says, "Home of the World’s Largest Turtle, Population: 505."
What was the idea behind the video?
We wanted to raise people’s awareness of their health. We eat, sleep, work and party, it’s all very fast but we’re not really aware of our health. Wanted to supplement the information by Wow with an eye catching and fun video that's provided in the program about health. So we came up with an in-taxi workout. She may be quite simple but she knows that health is important.
Who decided on the style and outfit for the video?
The creative team decided, the whole '80s style is coming back in so we thought, let’s make fun of the '80s. She's part Valley girl, Brooke Shields, Barbie and Richard Simmons.
What do you think of the reaction to the video?
I’m thrilled that there are so many people talking about health. Such a reaction is fantastic. Hopefully the next character launching on July 1 will be equally successful.
What has been some of the more unexpected comments?
Being called a transvestite! (laughs). An article in the Shanghai Daily called me, "distinctive looking." They said, that "poor girl who is so desperately trying to become famous." The only reason I agreed to was if I looked different – as anonymous as possible!
Has anyone recognized you on the street?
No. People who know me look at it and ask if it’s me. But even in the office a lot of people had no idea. I’m actually quite a private person. Don’t really go out that much. I like that no one recognizes me.
Would you do another video?
I don’t know yet. I want to get away from it as fast as I can. But if acting in a video helps people focus on their health, then yeah, I would. If it takes crazy characters to help people, then it’s worth it.
Is there anything else you want to say to your netizen fans?
Even healthy people deserve your love and affection, too.
If you've missed the video, here it is.
Yep, I would definitely be aiming to miss the "point" with him. You go right ahead though, maybe it would attracty some people to your bad art gallery.
Congrats on finding out about my secret life as a gallerist. Clearly, because my name is on that gallery, I must be responsible for that. Your powers of deduction are immense. I bow to you. Wrong person though.
You're not him? Thank goodness, that guy... well, that guy... age quod agis and all that. I'm guessing this is among your first articles that I've commented on? Don't get upset about anything I say, I honestly mean no harm. Unless you're lying about a restaurant when you give it a positive review. In which case, I mean you harm.
Pon? She looks "oriental", any idea what's her parentage? For all you know, she might be of Thai parentage, so Narfsweasal guess might have some accuracy there.
I love it when I'm in a taxi doing these stretches and the people in the cab next to me are doing the same thing. Secret Shanghai Yoga Taxi Club represent
If my limited Thai lang understanding is accurate, Pon (sometimes spelled Porn, as in Pontip or Chulapornkhlongtram etc.) - when interpreted in Thai - means "fruit" or "fruit bearing" or even "fine powder", so all in all, a rather feminine name from that South East Asian civilization/culture's angle.
;-) On a slightly naughty note, don't get addicted to Pon, guys! Cheers.
For being almost 40 she is quite doable.... wonder where does she works out... guess cleavage was a no go for taxi screens...
mmm... don't know, post a video of yourself doing the same movements and then we talk...
