Star Talk from 11th Shanghai International Film Festival

Again, here I am at Shanghai Film Art Center, the press center for 11th Shanghai International Film Festival and a battle field for entertainment journalists. Since this year's film festival officially started on a Saturday, it took me some effort to pull myself out of bed in the morning at 8am. Thanks to my guts, I was able to bring back some fresh and first-hand information from the International celebrities coming to join this festival. Everything was worth the effort.

Although the opening ceremony wouldn't be held until 7pm, journalist from all around the world had reined on the press center early in the morning. News had come out the day before about who the international celebrities were to show up, Chinese local superstars like Fan Bingbing and Chen Kun, internationally renowned actor and actress Jackie Chan and Zhang Ziyi and chairman of Jin Jue Jury board this year Wong Kar Wai. To get themselves a comfortable and competitive seats for the press conference coming up all day long, journalists and photographers were really for sprint anytime. Luckily enough, I was able to sit at the front row, staring at any star stepping onto the stage as close as I can. To honor the earthquake that had happened one month ago, this year's film festival has provisionally changed its theme to charity. Not surprisingly, all the celebrities present that day couldn't switch the topic off The Earthquake.

Let's take an inside look at what movie celebrities said at the film festival official press conference.

Fan Bingbing

Fan Bingbing had just flown over to Shanghai the day before from earthquake-stricken Dujiangyan. She was there with her company Polybona, inaugurating the project "Lighting Up the Eyes" to set up ourdoor film screening facilities in Sichuan. Thus, she hopes Sichuanese could enjoy more high-quality movies even after the national trauma. You had come to Shanghai International Film Festival as an actress for the last few times. But this time, you are the producer for your own studio. How does it feel to shift your identity? Shanghai Film Festival has been the proud of Chinese film lovers. Being the only top-class international film festival in China, it always attracts the most celebrities than any other occassions. Being a producer is not easy job, much harder than a pure actress. Apart from studying the screening play, I need to take care of every little details in the crew. It's a challenge for me. However, no matter what identity I am, I feel honoured to take part in every section of the festival. How will you define A International Celebrity? This is a new concept for this year's film festival. I think there are two ways to define a international celebrity: his/her charisma and the influence of the films. And they also have the responsiblity to recommend good films to mass audience during the festival.

Chen Kun

Chen Kun is very honored to be invited as an international celebrity to the Shanghai International Film Festival after he took a break from the entainment industry. What have you been up to recently? I have been taking a break from work for about eight months. I think I just need to relax myself after keeping acting for about ten years. Your new film Painted Skin is about to release. You worked with quite a few famous actors and actresses in the film like Zhao Wei, Sun Li, Zhou Xun and Donnie Yen. Can you spill some beans about the upcoming Chinese classical story? "Painted Skin" is a very popular ghost story from "The Strange Tales of Liao Zhai". I have been fond of it since when I was a kid. In the film "Painted Skin", we put a bit romance in this scary story, such as the triangle relationships. It has been a great pleasure to work with the other excellent actors and actress. Together, we build up a friendly and competitve atomsphere in the casting crew. Since you come from Chongqing, very close to the earthquake stricken area, what revelation you think the trauma brings to Chinese Film industry? This has been a traumatic year for China. We have been through the snow disaster early this year and the severe earthquake in May. However, it's also a good chance for all the actors and actress to unite together and spread the firm and positive attitude to every Chinese citizen. It can also help to create a positive and competitive atomsphere in Chinese film industry.

Zhang Ziyi

This is the first time for Zhang Ziyi to attend the Shanghai International Festival. Nevertheless, the event is never far from her. In 2004, the film "Jasimine Women", in which Zhang Ziyi portraited three different women joined Shanghai Film Festival and was crowned Special Jury Award. Zhang Ziyi was a bit late for the press conference. Peering into the backstage, I could see she was not well prepared on the way to the stage. We heard that you will be presented the "Outstanding Contributions to Chinese Film Award" at the opening ceremony. How do you feel about it? Well, I didn't expect the news had spread out. It's defintely a great honour to me personally. It's an award from China to confirm my effort as an actress. I am from Hawaii International Film Festival. To us, you are the biggest Chinese movie star in the west. I'd like to invite Miss. Zhang Ziyi to attend the next Hawaii International Film Festival this year. I have been invited by Hawaii Film Festival for quite a few time. I think if my schedule works, I will definitely come this year. However, I don't really consider myself a representitve to Chinese films or China, I am just trying to show my best to the world.

Jackie Chan

Jackie Chan has been invited by Shanghai International Film Festival every year. He considers it a great opportunity to know new friends while reconnecting with the old ones. Thousands of people have been moved by the performance initiated by you in Sichuan. What do you think Chinese film industry can do for the earthquake. I have been to Sichuan by myself this time and witness the great tragedy. However, I also felt the love wherever I went. I even saw non-Chinese being moved and lined up to donate money for the earthquake in London. On the other hand, I saw over 20 film companies working in Sichuan right now collecting video materials, hoping to make a movie soon. I don't think it will be a health situation to see over 20 films dedicated to the earthquake at the sametime. We should unite our power down to two or three movie companies and to make two to three high-quality films. Only in this way can we honour and remember the trauma we have been through. What do you think of environmental films? Is there any experiences we can learn from the western countries in term of this? It's very ture that making a movie is a wasting project. In China, almost all the common property will be abandoned or throwned away after the shooting. In contrast, 75% of the common property will be recycled in western countries, making it very eco-friendly. Although the situation is improving, there is still a lot for China to learn in terms of environmental filming. You were making the film "The Shinjuku Incident" before the earthquake. Since the happening of the earthquake, will you stop your work on hand and fully devote yourself in rebuilding the cities in Sichuan? Right after the production of the "The Shinjuku Incident", I went to Burma as the International Good-will Ambassador for UN to condole victims from the wind disaster. Then something bad happened in my own country. I had stayed in Sichuan for a short period of time before I realized this was not really helping. I'd rather set my eye in long-term plan for helping Sichuan, something like ten years for the whole reconstruction of the cities and schools. To answer your question, I won't stop making films for the earthquake. It's the only way I could support my foundation and help the people in need. For this year, I will probably stop my project for the olympics, but not for the earthquake.
