The Mean Streets of Taikang Lu

Our friends over at Shanghaiist recently chances across a protest on Taikang Lu (you can check out Jake Newby's report on the event here) by a resident who felt that the burgeoning Bohemian development was disruptive to residents; she decided to pin up some banners to that effect. The banners were taken down by police, but in the interests of community building, while enjoying the many delights of Taikang Lu, you may want to use your indoor voice while sipping your cappuccino al fresco, out of respect for the local residents.

Been to the Taikang Road area a couple of times, and from a personal point of view the place is quite out of touch with the area itself. Originally being a residential area, though quite run down admittedly, it's becoming more and more taken over by "Bohemian" style "artist" and revellers. Try put yourself in the same shoes, having several restaurants and bars/cafes right next to your house is not the most ideal neighbour that you would have liked. I lived above a pub in London for a couple of years and yes there is the joy of going downstairs for a pint anytime you like, but it does drives you bonkers when it's near closing time or you're tyring to get some rests. Also with so many new business moving in, property prices/rent are being driven up in the are and one must consider for the "indigenous" population living in the Taikang Road area is under such intense pressure to get cleared out. So some food for thought sa you're gulping that glass of lager or latte in the "idyllic" summer afternoon...
