How long is this course?

It’s 42 hours of theory, then 58 hours of practical, hands-on working. At the end of the course, everyone will have made two pieces: one as an exercise, another of your own creation. Materials, design, everything is up to you.

Wow, that’s intense.

Yes, but it’s not only theory, it’s general knowledge: how to work with metals, how pieces are made, quality, pricing, etc. And you need to know the basics. You cannot start without knowing these things in depth.

But isn’t that boring?

No, because we don’t just sit there as our teacher lectures. Yves gives many examples and shows us things. He is a really good teacher, funny and a really nice guy. On the first day of class, he bought ceramic cups and tea and coffee for everyone. So at the beginning of class, we go to the kitchen, make coffee, have class, order and eat some food, then back to class again.

What’s your favorite thing so far?

Learning about the colors of diamonds. I never thought there were more colors than white and yellow.

Like?

Pink, blue, brown and red. And I’ve discovered really nice stones, like Alexandrite. It changes color under different lights. Yves had put up slides to show all the colors, and it was like eating with my eyes for me! The best thing about jewelry is color. I make jewelry because I love colors.
