How did you start volunteering with River of Hearts (ROH)?
Last year I had a table at a bazaar and ROH was my neighbor. I did quite poorly as far as my sales went, because ROH was getting all the traffic! But I did get to learn about the wonderful work ROH does.
Which is?
It’s basically a service for the expat community, where they have a place to leave items they no longer need without letting them go to waste and, of course, a service to the local community that very much appreciates receiving the donations. We collaborate with other Shanghai charity groups and corporate sponsors like Santa Fe and Morgan Stanley that pitch in with their services throughout the year. We know ROH’s main activities are sorting and bagging all the donations three times a year.
How many bags do you guys receive each time?
Even though the time lapse between each party is a mere three or four months, we still collect an astounding amount of about 600 bags and boxes of donations every single time.
Wow, what kinds of donations do you accept?
Our slogan is “Giving things you no longer need to those who do.” With that in mind, we accept just about any item in good condition.
Where are they sent?
We’re in touch with several associations and select areas where the donations are most needed, depending on requests and research. In the past they have sent items to Anhui, Henan, Yunnan and Sichuan provinces as well as many groups within Shanghai.
Next sorting event: March 6, 9am-4pm
