The name means?

Greennovate Environmental Challenge for Kids Outreach.

What does the program do?

It aims to raise environmental awareness in urban, suburban and rural students who might not have access to environmental knowledge. We volunteer to visit schools and give presentations on environmental topics like carbon footprint, clean energy and green careers. Students learn via practical case studies and get simple tips and tools which they can easily use in their everyday lives.

What’s your role?

I work as a project presenter. Once, when visiting poor schools in Qinghai with the GECKO team, I was a super story teller and the biggest star among the students [laughs]. But besides environmental issues, our team also discussed their dreams and the future to give them hope and encouragement. After presenting, we were all so proud of ourselves, because besides giving knowledge, we got across the message that their voices were worth listening to. Not all volunteers present though. Some prepare materials, some help with logistics and so forth.

What makes you so passionate about the environment?

I’m from Shenzhen, and while we enjoy economic prosperity, we also see devastating environmental destruction. But what made me really interested was my personal encounter with the people from Greennovate.

What drives you to share your knowledge?

I believe the key to environmental education is sharing and spreading. We create opportunities for students to participate in the process of altering our home, our school and even our society, for the better. In a country as big as China, we firmly believe that everybody and every action counts.

Anything else?
