After an over-indulgent holiday season of consuming mountains of mooncakes and liters of booze, it might just be the perfect time to detox your system.

The word "detox" gets thrown around a lot, but it's nothing to be scared of. Our bodies are powerhouses when it comes to naturally cleansing the system of toxic materials. The body has five major organs which are capable of detoxification including; the skin, liver, kidneys, bowels and lungs. There are loads of hardcore detox programs out there which can help bring your body back to health. However if the thought of committing to a program scares you, there are simple things you can do daily to help cleanse the body. Try some of these techniques from Gaiam Life to help support your organs and make the process of releasing unwanted toxins more effective.

Watch what you eat
Eat plenty of fiber, including brown rice and organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. It's hard to eat healthily when out. M on the Bund has a super healthy and super tasty lunch set menu at the moment. For RMB98 you get a fresh organic carrot and ginger juice, healthy arugula salad, poached chicken with walnuts and a dessert of fresh pineapple and mint. Eating healthy has never been more decadent.

Take supplements
Help cleanse the liver by taking herbs such as dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle and drinking green tea. It's always best to speak to a doctor or a naturopath first as some supplements can interfere with some medications. There are some great online resources for buying supplements in China. Jump online to World Health Store and get them delivered straight to your door.

Boost your vitamin C levels
According to Gaiam Life, Vitamin C can help the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that drives away toxins. For a natural source, drink some freshly squeezed orange juice from Element Fresh, where they make their juices on the spot.

Drink more water
Drink at least eight glasses of water daily to help flush out toxins in the body. Beijing based Dr. Melissa Rodriguez says that drinking fluids such as water and tea is one of the easiest ways to detoxify the body. Don't just drink any water, jump online and order some "premium water" from vosswater.com.

Breathe
Deep breathing delivers oxygen to the system. Try your hand some meditation classes at Raja Yoga Centre or invest in a series of reiki sessions at Frank *n Sense.

De-stress
Eliminate stress from your life by emphasizing positive emotions. Positive emotions seem to come about more easily when your feeling good about yourself. Treat yourself to a day of pampering at Quan Spa. Let the friendly staff work their magic hands and be transformed from a state of stress to a state of bliss.

Try Hydrotherapy
According to Gaiam Life, you can practice hydrotherapy to detox the system. Jump in the shower and start by taking a very hot shower for five minutes, allowing the water to run on your back. Follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times, and then get into bed for 30 minutes.

Sweat it out in a sauna
Using a sauna helps the body eliminate wastes through perspiration. Try Le SPA at the Le Royal Méridien for their luxury infrared detox sauna.

Dry-brush your skin
Dry brushing helps unclog pores and assists in the elimination of toxins through the skin. Head to your nearest Sephora, grab a brush and get buffing.

Exercise
This is the most important way to detoxify your body; it gets the blood pumping and sweats out all your sins. Try some yoga classes at Yoga 109 and whip your body back into shape.

Wait a second, what ever happened to good old fashioned outdoor exercise? My detox is to head to Moganshan (or the like) with my mountain bike then bike for 4-5 hours. I swear by it. All the bad stuff gets sweated out and what you replace it with is clean clean air.

Yeah, this isn't how to detox, it's how to buy more crap that makes you feel like you're doing something. Voss water? Get your Vit C from Element Fresh? Gimme a break- this is just a list of high priced purchases grafted on to a rewrite of the Gaiam life website.
