My 8 month old daughter, Clara, started eating solid foods three months ago. I first tried feeding her jarred food from City Super. She hated it all except for a little fruit. Then, I tried to puree fresh vegetables, fruit and meat for her. Again, she would not eat. Every feeding session was a nightmare. She figured out how to close her mouth tightly and spit out any food I managed to squeeze inside.
When I went to the doctor recently, I found out that she was only about 10th percentile in weight and freaked out. Telling all my friends about my problem, I was offered many tips. Most did not work. Thankfully, one of these tips was method for making delicious, nutritious baby food. This one worked! Clara now gobbles up every meal and already looks more filled out.
I now share this with you.
Method:
-
You start by making a broth using meat on the bone. As I am not a good cook, I ask my ayi to make this for me. For example, today, she made a broth with whole chicken pieces, ginger and a few other Chinese roots.
-
Using garlic and a little bit of olive oil, stir fry together a selection of green vegetables. So far, I have stuck mainly to Chinese vegetables but any will do.
-
If you like, you might want to boil some other root vegetables like carrots, potatoes or squash.
-
Hard boil 2-3 eggs. Remove the yolks.
-
Cook some rice in the rice cooker. (Currently, we are using white rice but I might try with brown rice next week.)
-
When the broth is ready, separate out the liquid from the fat, meat, bones and other ingredients.
-
Take a little of the meat from the broth off the bone and set aside.
-
Combine the vegetables, egg yolks, meat and rice in a small pot. Add the broth and simmer. Continue cooking until everything becomes quite tender and there is very little liquid left.
-
Using a blender, blend the entire mixture until it becomes the consistency of baby food.
Voila! You can change the ingredients each time so that your baby does not get bored. If your baby is really picky, you can add a little salt or soya sauce as flavoring.
