We have been super lazy about bedtimes and routines for the last six weeks. The kids and I just got back from a two week trip home and our jetlag recovery is still underway. Not an ideal way to prepare for the new school year, but we will adjust. Eventually.
We went to visit our school yesterday (SCIS, Hongqiao). We met the teachers, said hi to last year’s teachers and greeted friends and familiar faces throughout the halls. It was quite different from a year ago when we were brand new to Shanghai and brand new to our school.
I saw the new families and new students and felt eager to offer support and help. It’s tough being new in town. No matter if you are a veteran expat or a first timer like we were last year. I felt especially drawn to the new kids. I’m hoping my kids will help them feel welcome and comfortable since they have the advantage of being returning students this time around.
My kids are excited but of course a little sad to have summer break end and “real life” begin again. Uniforms, routine, and the dreaded early morning bus pickup are all set to start on Monday. The good news is the kids will see old friends and make new ones, and benefit from the splendor that is the international private school experience.
When is the next school holiday? I better check!
