Living in Shanghai as a parent, I am constantly worried about the quality of the food I feed to my children. Recently, my friend Cindy Keung, mother of three, told me about an interesting AMCHAM event that she helped to organize which addresses the issue of food safety in Shanghai.

“As parents, we are responsible for grocery shopping for our families,” Keung explains. “We should all find out as much as we can about what the big grocery stores are doing to ensure quality control.” She adds that the event strives to “empower parents and other consumers to make good shopping choices.”

To Buy or Not to Buy – Food Safety for the Consumer

Date: January 19, Tuesday, 11:30-14:00. Location: The Portman Ritz-Carlton Hotel Price: Members (RMB): 230.00/Non Members (RMB): 350.00 To RSVP contact: AMCHAM Shanghai

Every consumer in China faces issues over the quality and safety of the food they eat and many are finding it increasingly difficult to get reliable information on the food they buy. Concerns ranging from hygiene standards and contamination to product traceability, storage and transport plague the food distribution process from supplier all the way to the supermarket shelves.

AmCham Shanghai’s Corporate Social Responsibility Committee invites you to a luncheon panel with three food safety and supply chain experts. Professionals from global supermarket chains, Ms. Aude Lesage of Carrefour and Ms. Jiang Xin of METRO, will discuss quality control, supply chain issues and working with suppliers to improve food safety standards. Dr. Robert Ma, formerly of McDonald’s Corp, will help us gain a better understanding of product contamination, additives, micro-organisms and genetically modified food. The seminar will be moderated by Mr. Grover Niemeier, Food Safety and Sanitation Specialist of Ecolab.

We hope you will join us for what promises to be an informative session aimed to help you make well-informed decisions about the food you eat.
