Awards!

It's not long now until the City Weekend Reader's Choice awards are announced. Breath is baited, wall space is being cleared.

The first name on my ballot sheet was "Jade On 36" for Best Restaurant.

The food I ate at Jade made me rethink what a chef can do, I spent the last 4 courses whimpering "I wish this could never end!" and was still cramming the last delicious morsels into my mouth when the paramedics came to repair my ruptured stomach.

It was the best meal of my life and yet I fully expect the winner of the Best Restaurant category to be KFC.

The problem with the Reader's Choice awards (and, let's just come out and say it, democracy) is that the majority of people are as dumb as a box of Tic-Tacs. Let's think about the most popular places in Shanghai, packed out at the weekend, lines around the block:

  • Bar Rouge,
  • Windows Too,
  • G+,
  • Pizza Hut-

the masses know what they like, and it's awful.

Short of having a questionnaire for voters giving them the right to vote (first question: "Is it ever acceptable to wear sunglasses in a club?") we're stuck with counting the number of sheep currently being herded into the shiniest fields.

"Democracy is the worst form of government. Except for all those others"

said Churchill, but if The Shelter doesn't win best club, I'm on the first rickshaw to Beijing.

[Come on CW readers, please prove me wrong!]

First of all, I strenuously agree with you regarding Jade on 36. But unfortunately it's not the most affordable of joints to just be dropping in on for a quick bite, unlike some other ubiquitous places... Speaking of KFCs, I have to sheepishly admit that I tried a papaya egg tart there yesterday and it was shockingly bad! They shouldn't have touched the original version! Will blog on it soon... so disappointing... now--back to dreams of Pairet's Lemon Tart... And also, I voted for the Shelter. p.s. what is G+???

It's a club inside a shopping centre, in XinTianDi.

Unless they filled the place with fibre glass and barbed wire, I don't see how it could get any worse.
