I Love Rum
I think at a certain point in life, every classy gent needs a good collection of booze in their house- it's the male version of having cushions and those tiny miniature ornamental boxes that ladies like.
When I first realised that a quart of cooking Sherry and three Cherry Brandy miniatures wasn't really cutting it as a "home bar" I first tried to get stocked up on whiskey.
Single Malts are some kind of grotesque joke to me, but I did manage to convince myself for a while that I liked Johnnie Walker. In fact I bought the whole Karma Chamaleon chorus set: Red, Gold and Green, but in the end I had to face the truth- to me it all tastes of old library books mixed with petrol.
Vodka is appealing, cool bottles with grey geese or onion domes on them, but at the end of the day, the best vodka in the world is supposed to taste of nothing. Also it makes you wet the bed.
Now though I've found my true calling: Rum.
The bottles have cool drawings of island type people rolling barrels of hooch next to palm trees, it comes from places I thought were fictional (Guadelope! Marie-Galante!), it's the favourite drink of both Ernest Hemingway and Pirates and- well I think I've made my point.
I'm going to this thing tonight to drink deep of my new elixir, think I might even turn up wearing a linen suit and panama hat too. You can't do that whilst drinking whiskey.

Yeah You are absolutely right Largeprofessor he shouldn't prance around in a panama hat drinking whiskey, he should prance around in a panama hat drinking RUM.
Rum is awesome ! Don't get me wrong I love Bourbon also but before you start lecturing someone on it look closely at his post. He was talking about Whisky not Whiskey, Scotch to be precise.
If you are such the expert on Bourbon perhaps explaining that Bourbon can only be aged in virgin white oak barrels, and that most Rums in fact use ex bourbon barrels for aging. Then the fact that up to 85% of the flavour profile in an aged rum comes from the aging process......
Ispy Keep up the good work brother and while you are at it have a look out for Ron Zacapa 23yo it's awesome !!!!!
Also Fat Professor when you get a chance if you have not already head to Hamilton House or Glamour Bar for a taste of Blanton's Single Barrel (worlds first single barrel rum sold into bars/shops) or the small japanese bars Constellation or 8 Balance are awesome for Bourbons and Rums alike.
Perhaps even both meet up and do a comparative tasting ???

dukeofdrink, you def know the time. I never realized the spelling subtleties between scotch and the rest. I've had Blanton's Single Barrel at Constellation, easily the best chill spot in town to catch a drink. btw where do you bartend? I don't know about this rum business, although HST drank it frequently, and I still detest ispyshanghai.

When I wrote about this on my [HTML_REMOVED]own site[HTML_REMOVED] I did sat that I like bourbon, just not Scotch.
So they use the same barrels eh? That would make a lot of sense- I'll keep a blurry eye out for Ron Zacapa. And Evan Williams.

I bet I can guess your name

No, you probably shouldn't prance around in a linen suit and panama suit drinking whiskey. Rum is something high school girls steal from their parents when their vodka coolers run out and the creepy guy from Burger King won't pick up his phone to buy them more because he passed out on Vicodin and Busch Light. But seeing that you drop the p-word on CW, this makes sense. Unfortunately your article, like most of China, ignores the better side of whiskey. Not the post-150RMB cover, served in a pitcher and undetectable due to the kool-aid of tea whiskey. I'm talking about goddamn bourbon. Evan Williams, Wild Turkey, Jim Beam. Cop a bottle of one of those, listen to "Night Train" by Guns N' Roses on repeat, hop on a random bus in Shanghai, and see where it spirits you away to.
