When we are all frustratingly pulling hair on our heads and trying to access Facebook, China's gays are already using their own facebook. No no no, I'm not talking about the impotent Gays.com, Feizan is China's latest answer to Facebook.
With almost the same layout as Facebook, Feizan.com even has the same colour as Facebook's signature blue. Curious to see how it works, I signed up an account and started a little treasure hunting.
Apart from the regular information regarding sex, education, profession and star signs, Feizan also requires users to reveal their sexual orientations (gay, straight, bi, or not sure, just in case you really aren't sure), outing status, role in relationships (striker or goalkeeper), hairiness and whether you are circumcised (what if you are a girl?). On top of all that, more specific questions are asked: Are you looking for “friends”, “lovers”, “roommates” or “wank buddes”? Will you get married (will get married, will not get married, will have a fake marriage, or not sure yet)? And who do you live with (alone, with parents, or with a partner)?
Many of these questions are not what you will see on Western gay dating sites, Feizan definitely has its Chinese characteristics tailored just for the situation.
Very similar to Facebook, Feizan also has the bits where you find people who you share same interests with. What books do you like? What music do you listen to? Favorite movies, games and sports, and who do you worship (no more Lady Gaga, sorry)?
Unlike Facebook, Feizan is really FAST. Two minutes after I finished filling in the personal details, 8 messages were already sitting in my inbox, from people who want to be my “friends”.
Unfortunately the site is in Chinese only. Oh well, dear tongzhis of Shanghai, it's time to pick up your mandarin textbooks again!

so, I mean, this is not surprising and first things first and all, but here is a reinforcement of a homosexuality that seeks to constrain by categorizing. yes, it serves a pragmatic purpose telling whether you're circumcised or not, to say nothign of whether you're straight, gay or bi. but does anyone know of a forum in shanghai or in china where more differences are recognized in queer issues than merely the need to swap out a man for a woman and call it even? does such a discussion of queer issues exist? i've been disappointed with all the times i've been asked, "are you the man or the woman?"
