Finding Lesbian Bars: Shanghai lala's nomadic epic

Finding a lala (lesbian) bar in Shanghai is significantly easier than it was a few years ago, when one had to spot a sister on the street and furtively follow her in hopes of being led to an actual bar–not a pet supply store or a rugby game. Though things have improved, Shanghai is still home to only three lala bars: Red Station, First on the Bund, and the recently relocated hangout Club Love. Although there are seven nights a week to go out, these three bars compete with each other for the pink yuan on weekends. We must carefully choose our crowd and location on any given Saturday.

Red Station

The permanent settlement of a formerly nomadic tribe of dykes who organized parties at a different location every weekend, Red Station is probably our best option. This would be a good thing if the music was at all decent and more of the crowd was above legal drinking age. Don't let my bitter rantings hinder your desire to do a bit of investigative partying though–Red Station is still a fun place to visit with a curious newcomer. And, since ending its itinerant hopping, this bar has become Shanghai's most consistent bash. It also presents opportunities for entertainment: the girls occasionally get drunk and take swings at each other, a novel sight to see until someone gets blood in your drink.

First on the Bund

This bar is a step up in terms of location, but after polishing off a martini or five at The Glamour Bar or Lounge 18 first, heading down to a “former” KTV bar with warm beer and emaciated dancers in booty shorts somehow feels like a social compromise. That said, First on the Bund is worth a visit after the hired entertainment clears out. The dance floor in the center of the bar packs out with girls, giving us the opportunity to mingle with the very friendly locals. And, knock on wood, I've yet to see a brawl erupt there.

Club Love

The third option, Club Love, while only open for a few months, is consistently packed and has decent music. But, in true Shanghai fashion, it has just migrated to another temporary location.

What Lalas are Left With

This grand total of 2.5 bars leaves us lalas feeling a bit forlorn in the city. Fortunately Shanghai's breeder scene offers refuge. The Glamour Bar, Velvet Lounge, Kathleen's 5 and JZ Club are all places to spot a stray flock or two of brother girls on the move.
