The "commie homo-loving sons of guns" bit of Sean Penn's fabulous Oscar acceptance speech for Milk was altered before being broadcast on Asia's STAR network. In addition to other various changes and omissions, Kenneth Tan notes that subtitles in China read "你们可真够宽容的," which roughly translates as "you really are so generous." Not quite the same.

Both Sean Penn and Dustin Lance Black used their time at the podium to voice their support for the gay movement and their opposition to Prop 8, a ballot proposition passed in November that denies same-sex couples marriage rights in California.

Were I the translator, wary of my censors, I might have translated Penn's golden line as "谢谢同志们." This can mean thank you homos or thank you comrades, depending on your definition of the word 同志. Everyone wins.
