Shanghai's Newest LGBT Nights You Need to Know

Spring is here and with it the urge to crawl out of the pile of DVDs and McDonald’s delivery cartons I’ve been hibernating in. Luckily, party planners are ready to help us spend our hard-earned pink notes.

Tequila Tuesdays
On Tuesday nights, Yucca, one of David Laris’s concepts in Sinan Mansions, goes gay for Cosmo Pink Party. From 7pm ’til late, this Mexican-themed hetero watering hole transforms into what the promoter describes as “the ultimate gay lounge.” Its martini night on Thursday is usually pretty thick with boys and girls of all persuasions, so I have high hopes.

Hump Day
Another new weeknight special is the OUT party at Brownstone on Wednesdays. This one offers 50 percent off selected drinks from 7pm, though the discount decreases as the evening wanes, so it’s best to go early. They have a great patio there, which makes it ideal for cruising the trade wandering into Lola (more on that later). One of my favorite mavens of the sapphic scene has declared a personal interest in getting people to this night, so hopefully you girls will get out there and give her something to look at.

When writing about Lola, my indefatigable boss Nick Taylor wrote “Is it a club? Is it a bar? No, it’s Lola.” And it seems that the crowd here is similarly uncertain about which way they swing. This is one of those places I like to call a Bi-bar: it’s a hetero crowd but with enough pink around the edges to make it interesting. Their cocktails aren’t half bad, either, and after enough of them who knows what you could poach.

Weekend Wars
On Friday and Saturday nights, the homo trinity of Eddy’s, Shanghai Studio and D2 still reigns supreme. The fruit loop begins with the homo hoards descending on Eddy’s for their first drinks before crossing the street to get lost in Shanghai Studio’s warren of rooms, then finally rolling down to D2 to lose their shirts. But I reckon you already know this, so I’m here to tell you about some stuff you might not know about.

Now and Then
JoVino has periodic LGBT wine tasting events and Cotton’s on Anting Lu also hosts girls’ drinks the second Tuesday of every month at 7:30pm and, lest we forget, another Pride is just around the corner, so get out there and party. I’m on my way to the gym to start working out again since it seems all the rest of you spent the winter with Element Fresh on speed dial and a hip-hop abs DVD on repeat.

What is your top LGBT night around town?

Adam, thanks for writing this article. The LGBT community really needs more outlet and promoters.I was just at Yucca a couple of weeks ago. Their Tuesday's Cosmo Pink Party is fabulous! The manager and bartenders there are super friendly, and the guests does not disappoint either. I second that notion. Calling all my brothers and sisters in the LGBT community, go to Yucca and party "Cosmo Pink" style! Long Live Yucca!
