I swear before Supergirl aired on television in China I didn't see half as many baby dykes wandering around the streets of Shanghai. Now they're everywhere.
Since Li Yu Chun won the first round of Supergirl, China's version of Pop Idol for female contestants, the baby dykes have been given a new license to parade around in all of their homo glory. The winners of the Supergirl contest for the first 5 years were not openly gay, but all had short hair, slightly boyish dress, and could easily be recognized by any Chinese lala (lesbian) as "family." The teenage fans used the new emergence of lesbian role models in the media as an excuse to start more outwardly expressing their sexuality, mostly through dress and style.
Most members of society here operate on a don't ask don't tell policy when it comes to all matters homosexual, so even if grandma and grandpa did take notice of the 'warning signs' (holding hands with girlfriends, resisting marriage, "butch and femme" coupling, short hair, boyish dress) they would turn a blind eye, and wouldn't dare bring it up.
Way to work the system, girls.
Younger girls (20s and younger) are granted a bit more freedom now, and many of them are able to avoid marriage and a few are even out to their parents.
