The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak
Check out our liveblog and podcast from his talk at SILF on Saturday, March 7 at 5pm at M on the Bund.
About the Book
A darkly funny, sardonic, surprisingly compassionate Death narrates this story, set in Nazi Germany, about “a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter and quite a lot of thievery.”
Reluctantly drawn to the 9-year-old Liesel in spite of himself, Death follows her life as she pilfers books from a gravedigger, a Nazi book burning and the mayor’s wife’s library. These acts help sustain her soul through the hardships and dangers of the times. For Liesel, words and books hold the power of loss, friendship, love and ultimately, redemption
