Geek is the New Chic: City Weekend Book Club

As the City Weekend Book Club approaches its second year, we’re gearing up for a re-birth. And in the spirit of Shanghai’s penchant for change, all you book clubbers will see a lot of change coming your way. First up, the book club is now officially ONLINE!

This day marks the official launch of the Shanghai City Weekend Book Club Forum. And by that I mean, we’ll be book clubbing with you 24/7. Tell us what you want to read…or what you don’t want to read. Post your suggested books for the monthly sessions, give us your thoughts on our current read and get all sorts of “bookish” discussions going.

And to beef things up, we’re joining forces with the Beijing Book Mooch Forum. See what the folks up north are reading and one of these days, we might all decide to read the same thing so we can have a huge book club blowout online.

Really, folks…the possibilities are endless…and we’re just getting started!

GO HERE to recap the pages that we've turned in the past year, and to suggest new ones for 2008.

GO HERE to find out what we're currently reading.

GO HERE to the general forum, your starting point for all things Book Club and Book Crossers.

JOIN OUR MAILING LIST

Mark your calendars. Every second Sunday of the month, the City Weekend Book Club meets in Figaro at 4pm. It’s the perfect weekender – meet new friends, stimulate a few brain cells, grab a new read and talk about anything and everything under the sun (life, love, shopping – the essentials. Haha!). All these, plus a great cup of coffee, what more could you ask for?

City Weekend has predicted it and the Book Club is confirming it...GEEK IS THE NEW CHIC!

Geek is the new chic and book is the new...black. Do we need to sign up first to join the Book Club or can we just show up? How do we get on the Book Club email list?

Just show up! You're not even required to have read the book. You're not even expected to be a big reader. If you're the slightest bit interested, just show up and check it out :)

Do we have to discuss books or can we discuss anything? magazines, newspapers, academic tripe, dogmatic diatribes, wacky subway signs ... can we discuss anything and everything we read?

Yes! To add to your list...we can also discuss: chinglish signs, ads on bathroom stall doors, price tags, recipes, how to's, etc. We can also discuss well written scripts! And I'm not being sarcastic because the book club does tend to come up with amusing and highly informative discussions (during and after actual book discussion).

Well, this is awesome stuff! Thanks Ros, City Weekend and everyone who helped put up this blog. It is a wonderful forum for folks who would like to continue discussion of the book and for those who are not able to make it and so would like to discuss on the book. The idea of bringing the Shanghai and the Beijing book clubs together to read the same book sounds fascinating!
